The name is also used in Scandinavia and Slovenia .

In the English and especially Spanish-speaking countries, the alternative spelling Anya is common.

The name Anja was not very common in Germany in the first half of the 20th century. It then quickly became popular in the 1950s. From the mid-1960s to the early 1980s, it was often among the ten most frequently given girls' first names of the respective year. In the 1990s, its popularity fell sharply.
