Anja Kampe (* in Zella-Mehlis , Suhl-Land district , GDR ) is a German-Italian opera singer (dramatic soprano ).

Life

Anja Kampe got into opera singing by chance. She actually wanted to learn the guitar, but there was no free place at university: "My first singing teacher happened to hear me sing and asked if I would try singing lessons." She stayed in her hometown until graduating from high school and studied with her first music teacher Hannelore Schlegelmilch. She then studied singing at the Carl Maria von Weber Academy of Music in Dresden . Shortly before the fall of the Wall , she married an Italian when she was still in the GDR and moved to Turin , where she finished her studies at the Conservatory. In 1991, Anja Kampe made her debut as Gretel in the opera Hansel und Gretel at the Turin Teatro Regio . She won several competitions, including the Giovanni Battista Viotti von Vercelli International Music Competition and the third International Competition for Wagner Voices in Saarbrücken .

Numerous engagements have taken the soprano to the major music stages in Italy, France, Israel, Spain, Germany, Austria, Belgium, the USA, England, Japan and the Netherlands. In summer 2002 she made her debut at the Bayreuth Festival as Freia in Rheingold and as Gerhilde in Die Walküre . From 2013 to 2015 she sang Sieglinde in Bayreuth under the musical direction of Kirill Petrenko. With him she sang Isolde at the Ruhrtriennale 2011, a role in which she had made her debut at the Glyndebourne Festival. She celebrated successes at the Bavarian State Opera , where she made her debut in 2006 as Senta in Fliegende Holländer and subsequently appeared as Ariadne in Ariadne auf Naxos and Leonore in Fidelio , Sieglinde in Wagner's Walküre or Katharina in Lady Macbeth von Mzensk. She made her debut as Leonore on December 7, 2014 at the opening of the season at Scala under the direction of Daniel Barenboim, with whom she could also be seen at the Berlin State Opera in the new productions Tosca and Parsifal. At the Salzburg Easter Festival 2016 she made her debut under the direction of Christian Thielemann as Brünnhilde in Wagner's Walküre. She had further successes at the Covent Garden opera houses in London and at the Vienna State Opera .

Anja Kampe, who is equally celebrated for her performance, works with the most important directors of the opera theater, including Harry Kupfer, Calixt Bieto and Dimitri Tcherniakov.

In addition to her international stage presence, Anja Kampe works as a lieder and concert singer. As such she worked with Philippe Jordan, Daniel Harding , James Conlon , Mark Elder , among others .

In January 2018 Anja Kampe was named "Bavarian Chamber Singer".
