James Conlon (* 18th March 1950 , New York ) is a US -American conductor .

Life

James Conlon studied at the Juilliard School of Music in New York. His first conducting was in Spoleto in 1971 . Since 1979 he has worked internationally in various management positions. From 1983 to 1989 he was music director in Rotterdam . From then until 2003 he was general music director of the city of Cologne and chief conductor of the Cologne Opera and the Gürzenich Orchestra . After temporarily directing the Paris Opéra de la Bastille , he returned to the USA and took over the direction of the Ravinia Festival as well as conducting the Van Cliburn piano competition in Fort Worth / Texas. From the 2006/07 season he took over the management of the Los Angeles Opera Company. In 2016 he conducted the Venice New Year's Concert . Since 2016, James Conlon has directed the National Symphony Orchestra of Italy's public broadcaster RAI (" Orchestra sinfonica nazionale della RAI ")

Conlon is married to Iowa City soprano Jennifer Ringo, and the couple have two daughters.
