from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Gürzenich Orchestra Cologne is the symphony orchestra of the city of Cologne , founded as the Cölner Städtisches Orchester , which celebrated its 125th anniversary in the 2013/2014 season.

history

The orchestra is named after the former concert hall, the Gürzenich . The orchestra has been based in the Cologne Philharmonic since 1986 .

In the tradition of the cathedral chapel, the history of the orchestra goes back to the 15th century. The “Concert Society”, founded in 1827, organized “Winter Concerts”, from which the “Gürzenich Concerts” emerged from 1857. The Cologne theater orchestra, which existed throughout the 19th century, was taken over into municipal services in 1888.

From the 2003/2004 season to 2013/2014 the Cologne General Music Director Markus Stenz was responsible for the Gürzenich Orchestra in addition to the Cologne Opera . James Gaffigan , chief conductor of the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra and permanent guest conductor of the Radio Filharmonisch Orkest in Hilversum, has been the first guest conductor of the Gürzenich Orchestra since the beginning of the 2012/2013 season .

From the 2015/16 season, François-Xavier Roth took over the post of General Music Director. In May 2020 it was announced that his contract had been extended to 2025 with an option to 2027.

The orchestra manager Stefan Englert will become the managing director of the Gürzenich Orchestra on September 1, 2018, replacing Patrick Schmeing, who held the office until the end of 2017.
