Radio Filharmonisch Orkest

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Radio Filharmonisch Orkest (RFO) is a Dutch radio philharmonic orchestra from Hilversum in the Netherlands . The RFO is part of several ensembles that are grouped under the umbrella of the Muziekcentrum van de Omroep ( Radio Music Center ), which in turn is affiliated with the Nederlandse Publieke Omroep ( Dutch public service broadcaster ).

The RFO works mainly with NPO Radio 4 , the broadcaster for classical music. Preferred venues for public appearances are in Amsterdam and Utrecht and at the Dutch Opera .

Albert van Raalte founded the orchestra in 1945 and was also the first chief conductor until 1949. The subsequent chief conductors included Paul van Kempen , Bernard Haitink , Jean Fournet , Willem van Otterloo , Hans Vonk and Sergiu Comissiona . From 1989 to 2004 Edo de Waart was chief conductor of the orchestra and received the title of honorary conductor after his departure. He was followed by Jaap van Zweden 2005-2012 as chief conductor and artistic director, who was subsequently awarded the title of honorary chief conductor. As early as August 2010, the RFO announced the engagement of Markus Stenz as chief conductor for the 2012-2013 season with an initial term of three years.

In October 2010 the minority government, formed from the VVD and CDA and tolerated by the PVV, announced the plan that the Muziekcentrum van de Omroep should be dissolved in 2012 due to financial problems, with the consequence that this would also have meant the end of the RFO. After protests from the population, Marja van Bijsterveldt , Minister for Education, Culture and Science , announced that the music center would be subsidized by the Dutch state from 2010 to 2012 with annual donations of 12 to 14 million euros. In December 2012, Bernard Haitink took over the patronage of the orchestra with the intention of soliciting donations to ensure the survival of the orchestra.

In 2019 Markus Stenz resigned from his position. In the same year, the American Karina Canellakis became the orchestra's chief conductor.
