Karina Canellakis

Karina Canellakis (born August 23, 1981 in New York ) is an American conductor and violinist .

Life

Karina Canellakis comes from a family with Greco-Russian roots. She grew up in a musical family in New York. She completed her music studies at the Curtis Institute of Music in 2004. From 2005 to 2007 she played the violin in the Orchestra Academy of the Berlin Philharmonic . From 2011 to 2013 she studied conducting at the Juilliard School . From 2014 to 2016 she worked as an assistant with the Dallas Symphony Orchestra , with which she also conducted her first concert in October. She made her European debut in 2015 when she conducted the Chamber Orchestra of Europe for the first time . In September 2017 she conducted the RSO Berlin for the first time .

In December 2018 Canellakis became the first female conductor to conduct the annual Nobel Prize concert with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra. In April 2019, the RSO Berlin announced the appointment of Canellakis as its next first guest conductor, the first female conductor to take over this position with effect for the 2019/2020 season. [17] On July 19, 2019 Canellakis became the first ever female conductor to conduct the premiere of the Proms at the Royal Albert Hall (London).

In April 2020, the London Philharmonic Orchestra (LPO) announced the appointment of Canellakis as its new first guest conductor, the first ever female conductor to take over the position with effect from September 2020 after her first guest conductor with the LPO in October 2018 occurred.

She has been heading the Radio Filharmonisch Orkest since the 2019/2020 season . She has been the first guest conductor at the RSO Berlin since 2020 .
