John Van Engen
John H. Van Engen (born August 23, 1947 ) is an American medieval historian .
Life
He graduated from Calvin College with a BA and the University of California, Los Angeles with a PhD (1976), where he studied with Gerhart Ladner . He also studied with Peter Classen at Heidelberg University . He entered the faculty of the University of Notre Dame in 1977 , where he was director of the Medieval Institute from 1986 to 1998. He retired in 2017.
He conducts research on monasticism, women's writing, schools and universities, the inquisition, canon law, reform ideas and general medieval religious culture.
