Rupert von Deutz
Rupert von Deutz (also Rupertus Tuitiensis ; more rarely: Robert von Deutz ; * around 1070 in the Liege area ; † March 4, 1129 in Deutz ) was an exegete , mystic and liturgy commentator .
Life
As a child, Rupert was given as a donation to the Benedictine monastery of St. Laurentius in Liège . Due to the turmoil of the investiture dispute and the problems resulting from it, he was ordained a priest only when he was about 35 years old . His smaller writings, such as the legends of saints and spiritual poems, which were written before this time, have largely not survived.
From approx. 1110 until his death in 1129 he wrote an immense literary work that had a decisive influence on many theologians of the 12th century, especially in the German-speaking area. Before the attacks of his dogmatic opponents, Rupert withdrew to the Michaelsberg monastery in Siegburg around 1113 and became abbot of the St. Heribert monastery in Deutz (Cologne) in 1120 , where he died in 1129. Rupert commented on most of the Bible. He only dealt with dogmatic, religious or hagiographic topics in isolated cases in smaller writings. His salvation-historical epic De victoria Verbi Dei achieved particular popularity . The allegorical and typological interpretation of the Holy Scriptures reached its climax with Rupert. His commentary on the book of Ezekiel became the theological basis for the painting of the church in Schwarzrheindorf .
Among his comments are those on the Apocalypse and the Song of Songs in close relation to his mysticism. Other important writings are his commentaries on the Gospels of John and Matthew , on the minor prophets, a commentary on the liturgy of the mass and the church year as well as his two trinity writings De sancta trinitate et operibus eius and De glorificatione trinitatis et processione spiritus sancti .
