history

Around 1800, during the rule of the French, the Netherlands received a centrally organized state administration . Education was initially one of the priority areas of the Ministry of the Interior . The Ministry of the Interior also had its own departments for the arts and sciences. In 1798 an agency was established for "national education, including medicine, the education of national morals, and the promotion of public schooling and the arts and sciences".

With the constitution of 1917 the political dispute over the "school question" came to an end; Government funding for religious schools was approved. As a result, the establishment of a separate Ministry of Education was seen as necessary; the establishment happened on September 25, 1918. The first Minister for Education was Johannes Theodoor de Visser (1918-1922 and 1922-1925). At the same time, in 1919, the Education Council ( Onderwijsraad ) was set up as an advisory body.

The ministry also dealt with government policy in the field of arts and science. Only in the period from 1965 to 1994 was art and culture housed elsewhere; During this time, cultural policy belonged to areas such as recreation , social work and the common good .
