The Ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken , or BZ for short, is the ministry responsible for foreign affairs, diplomatic relations, European cooperation and international development cooperation in the Kingdom of the Netherlands . The Ministry was founded in 1798 during the period of the Batavian Republic as the Department of Foreign Affairs and has been called the Ministry of Foreign Affairs since 1876 .

Stef Blok ( VVD ) has been Foreign Minister in the Rutte III cabinet since 2018 . This is supported by Sigrid Kaag ( D66 ), Minister without portfolio responsible for foreign trade and development cooperation.

The ministry is headed by two ministers. A State Secretary ( Secretaris-generaal ), the diplomatic missions and numerous other independent commissions are subordinate to these .

Ministry

The management staff consists of the two heads of department, the State Secretary and his deputy as well as the four heads of the directorates-general.

The four directorates-general are

  • The General Directorate for European Cooperation deals primarily with cooperation in Europe within the framework of the European Union. She is responsible for Dutch relations with EU member states and the candidate countries. The Directorate General also coordinates cooperation within other organizations, such as the Council of Europe , the OECD and the Benelux Union .
  • The General Directorate for Political Affairs deals primarily with peace and conflict matters and human rights. This includes coordination within the framework of the EU's common foreign and security policy and the political role of the Netherlands in NATO and the United Nations .
  • The General Directorate for Foreign Trade shape trade and foreign trade policy.
  • The Directorate-General for International Cooperation is responsible for development cooperation in the areas of economic development, education, health and the environment. It carries out development cooperation in consultation with the United Nations and the World Bank.

There are over 170 diplomatic missions in the kingdom. The representations include (as of June 2019)

  • 13 representative offices at international organizations (such as United Nations, EU, NATO)
  • 26 other agencies (such as business offices ("NBSO" or "NTIO") or ambassadors )
  • 1 Representation at the Palestinian Authority

Head of department

There have been three political leaders in the Dutch Foreign Ministry since the 1990s: the Foreign Minister, the Minister without Portfolio responsible for Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation, and the State Secretary for European Affairs. The State Secretary has the right to call himself a Minister for European Affairs abroad.
