The Ministerie van Volksgezondheid, Welzijn en Sport (short: VWS , German: Ministry for Health, Common Welfare and Sport ) is a Dutch ministry .
This ministry is primarily responsible for public health . This applies to the areas of hospitals, pharmaceuticals, health costs (see also: health insurance in the Netherlands ) and general practitioners. Furthermore, the ministry is responsible for preventive health care and food safety . Welfare issues such as care for the elderly, youth policy, socio-cultural work, addiction care and social services are also part of the scope of duties. The ministry is also responsible for sports policy.
history
The Ministry was established in 1982 as the Ministry for the Common Good, Health and Culture (Ministerie van Welzijn, Volksgezondheid en Cultuur, short: WVC), a merger of subdivisions of the Ministries for Culture, Recreation and Social Work (Ministerie van Cultuur, Recreatie en Maatschappelijk Werk, short : CRM) and for health and environmental hygiene (Volksgezondheid en Milieuhygiëne, or Vomil for short).
In 1994 the area of cultural policy shifted to the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science ( Ministerie van Onderwijs, Cultuur en Wetenschap ), so that the current name was adopted. The headquarters are located together with the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor ( Ministerie van Sociale Zaken en Werk Genealogieheid ) in the Castalia building in The Hague . Until 1998 it was located in the office building called “Hoogvoorde” in Rijswijk .

Since October 26, 2017, the responsible minister is Hugo de Jonge ( CDA ). He replaced Edith Schippers ( VVD ). The State Secretary responsible here has been Paul Blokhuis ( CU ) since 2017 . He is the successor to Martin van Rijn ( PvdA ).
The Ministry of VWS has different subdivisions:

- Inspectie Gezondheidszorg en Jeugd (IGJ)
- College ter Beoordeling van Geneesmiddelen (CBG)
- CIBG (Centraal Informatiepunt Beroepen Gezondheidszorg)
