history

The area was probably already settled in prehistory , as evidenced by the discovery of bronze jewelry dating from the Iron Age in 1897 near the thermal spring . In the grotto of Bérénice were 1,976 prehistoric animal finds such as the remains of bones of bison , bears, mountain goats and reindeer and human artifacts from the Iron Age, like u. a. a skullcap or a complete vase with two handles, secured. An ancient bust that was found on the site of today's thermal baths indicates that this place was already regularly visited during this period. The Roman road from Beneharnum ( Lescar ) to Caesaraugusta ( Saragossa ) led past today's municipality.

As a result, the village developed around a commandery on one of the pilgrimage routes to Santiago de Compostela . The Commandery de Buer was founded in 1144 by Gaston IV , called the Crusader , Viscount of Béarn, and was subordinate to the Abbey of Santa Cristina of Somport , later to the Knights Templar . In the census of the Béarn in 1385, 14 households were counted in Lurbe and it was noted that the place belonged to the Bailliage of Oloron. There was a lay monastery that was subordinate to the Viscount de Béarn. A special feature of the community was that Cagots , a group of people who were discriminated against in Spain and France from the 13th to well into the 19th century and largely excluded from social life, made up the majority of the residents, but were shunned by the minority . The community became known during World War II when, in June 1944, maquisards , French partisans of the Resistance , derailed a train coming from Spain in the community area. On August 23, 1955, Saint-Christau was officially added to the municipality of Lurbe.
