Berrogain-Laruns is a French municipality with 161 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Pyrénées-Atlantiques in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine . The municipality belongs to the arrondissement of Oloron-Sainte-Marie and the canton of Montagne Basque (until 2015: canton of Mauléon-Licharre ).
The name in the Basque language is Berrogaine-Larüntze . The inhabitants are called berrogaintar or larünztar .

Berrogain-Laruns is located about 35 km west of Oloron-Sainte-Marie in the historical region of Soule , one of the three historical territories in the French part of the Basque Country .

Berrogain-Laruns is located in the catchment area of the Adour River . The Saison , a tributary of the Gave d'Oloron , marks the western limit of the municipal area.
history
The area has been inhabited since prehistory , as evidenced by an archaeological site. It is a defense ring made of earth walls. Berrogain was a stage for pilgrims on the Way of St. James to Santiago de Compostela in the Middle Ages . The place was mentioned in 1466 as Berroganh in the contracts of Ohix, notary of Soule, also in 1508 as Berroganhe in the copial book of Bayonne . Laruns was mentioned earlier than Laruntz in 1383 in the contracts of the Lumtz, Notary des Béarns and 1386 as Leruntz by notaries of Navarrenx . On the map of Cassini 1750, the two places are entered in the current spelling. Between 1790 and 1794 they joined forces to form the Berrogain-Laruns community.
Population development
After the peak of over 200 inhabitants in the first half of the 19th century, the number has tended to decrease by half and is now in an approximate range between 100 and 150, with a slight increase recently.

Attractions
- Berrogain Chapel. The building is an example of rural architecture with its simple design and naive painting in the interior. The chapel is built of coarse gravel with a clocher trinitaire typical of the Soule . The gable has three pointed roofs as a symbol for the Trinity , with a stone cross in the middle.
- Landastoy house. The farm was built between the end of the 17th and the beginning of the 18th century, making it one of the oldest preserved buildings in the municipality. The complex shows architectural elements that are unmistakable for buildings of the Soule. Its walls made of coarse gravel and pebbles and the steeply sloping roofs are typical of the region. Occasionally there are roofs in the villages with a roof pitch of up to 50 °. They prevent the snow from piling up on the roof in winter and pressing on the house and help against wind and bad weather. The overall layout of the courtyard is also specific to traditional Soule farms with the T-shaped stable behind the house.
Economy and Infrastructure
Berrogain-Laruns is located in the AOC zones of Ossau-Iraty , a traditionally produced semi-hard cheese made from sheep's milk, as well as the pig breed and the ham "Kintoa".
