Préchacq-Navarrenx is a French municipality with 165 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Pyrénées-Atlantiques in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine (before 2016: Aquitaine ). The municipality belongs to the arrondissement of Oloron-Sainte-Marie and the canton of Le Cœur de Béarn (until 2015: canton of Navarrenx ).

The name in the Gascognic language is Preishac-Navarrencs . The inhabitants are called Préchacquais and Préchacquaises .

Préchacq-Navarrenx is located about 15 km northwest of Oloron-Sainte-Marie in the historic province of Béarn .

Préchacq-Navarrenx is located in the catchment area of ​​the Adour River on the right bank of the Gave d'Oloron , a tributary of the Gave de Pau . One of its tributaries, the Layoû (or “Layous” written), crosses the area of ​​the municipality.

history

The 1385 census of the Béarn counted 39 households in Préchacq-Navarrenx. This also included the house of a miller, which underlines the importance of the village in that era. Préchacq-Navarrenx was part of the Navarrenx Bailliage . A ferry carried farmers and pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago to Santiago de Compostela to cross the Gave. The French King Louis XVI. wanted to connect Navarrenx with Pau and had a corresponding road built over the heights of Préchacq-Navarrenx, which is now called Chemin Royal ( German Royal Way ).

Population development

After a peak of 450 inhabitants in the middle of the 19th century, the number fell to around 150 during short recovery phases by the turn of the millennium. In the following period, moderate growth was recorded, which has recently stagnated again.

Attractions

  • Parish church dedicated to Maria Magdalena . It was built at the end of the 19th century according to plans by the architect Casanave. Its specialty is the pink exterior plaster, which emphasizes the white stone that surrounds the windows and entrances. Access to the interior of the church is via a porch below the four-meter-wide square bell tower . The weight of the upper parts of the tower is distributed by two lateral, eight-meter-high buttresses . His helmet , covered with slate, ends at the top with a wrought-iron cross decorated with volutes . The bell tower has four floors. The first conceals the arched entrance portal with two archivolts . A two meter high and 50 cm wide opening brings light to the second floor, while on the third floor a glazed ocular in the form of a rose window provides brightness. Twin windows break through the facade on three sides at the level of the fourth floor. The nave is four bays long and offers space for three naves , which are separated by arched arcades. It ends with a semicircular apse and is covered with a false barrel vault. The vault of the choir is embellished with a painting that illustrates the motif of the Ascension of Christ .

Ossau-Iraty

Corn cultivation and handicrafts are important economic factors in the community. Préchacq-Navarrenx is located in the AOC zones of Ossau-Iraty , a traditionally made semi-hard cheese made from sheep's milk, as well as the pig breed and the ham "Kintoa".
