Lys is a French municipality with 334 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Pyrénées-Atlantiques in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine (before 2016: Aquitaine ). The municipality belongs to the arrondissement of Oloron-Sainte-Marie and the canton of Oloron-Sainte-Marie-2 (until 2015: Canton Arudy ).
The name in the Gascognic language is Lo Lis . It comes from the Gascognic word lis and means "flat terrain". The inhabitants are called Lysois and Lysoises .

Lys is located about 30 km southeast of Oloron-Sainte-Marie in the historic province of Béarn .

Lys is located in the catchment area of the Adour River .
The Luz , a tributary of the Gave de Pau , flows together with its tributaries,
- the Luz de Casalis and
- the gest with its inflow,
- the Ruisseau de Herran,
through the territory of the municipality.
Likewise, the Landistou, a tributary of the Béez , irrigates the municipal area along with its tributaries
- Ruisseau de Lespereu,
- Ruisseau de Betbeder,
- Ruisseau du Chourrup,
- Ruisseau de Bonnasserre and
- Ruisseau de Lazerau.
Lys is also crossed by the Landistou of the same name and by the Ruisseau de la Fontaine de Mesplé and its tributary, the Ruisseau de Subercase.
history
For a long time Lys was a hamlet in the commune of Sainte-Colome. In the scriptures, Lys appeared in the form Lis-Sainte-Colomme in 1727 . On the map of Cassini 1750, the hamlet is entered in the form of Lys . On January 2, 1859, Lys became an independent municipality.
Population development
After the population peaked at over 1000 after the municipality was founded, the number fell to a level of around 350 inhabitants during short recovery phases until the turn of the millennium, which is still held today. A particularly marked decline can be seen in the period after the First World War .

Attractions
- Parish church, dedicated to the Assumption . A first new building took place at the end of the 18th or the beginning of the 19th century. After the failure of a rebuilding project in 1874, the project by architects Pierre Gabarret and Jules Noutary was approved in 1902. It envisaged a new building in the same location as the previous church with a main south facade using the materials of the old building. The work was carried out between 1904 and 1906. The new church has a three-aisled nave with four bays . The side aisles are separated by arched arcades . The bell tower above the entrance has a slate- covered helmet . The stained glass windows with figures are attributed to the glass painters Louis-Victor Gesta from Toulouse or Gustave Pierre Dagrant from Bordeaux .
Economy and Infrastructure
Agriculture has traditionally been one of the municipality's most important economic factors. Lys is located in the AOC area of Ossau-Iraty , a traditionally made semi-hard cheese made from sheep's milk.

sport and freetime
- The GR 78 long-distance hiking trail from Carcassonne to Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port runs along the southern municipal boundary. It follows a byway of the Camino de Santiago to Santiago de Compostela .
- A circular route of 4.4 km in length with a difference in altitude of 120 m leads from the center of the municipality into the surrounding hills.
