Moumour is located in the catchment area of the Adour River on the left bank of the Gave d'Oloron , a tributary of the Gave de Pau . The Ruisseau de Lamiellotte, the Vert and the Ruisseau de Tastillat, tributaries of the Gave d'Oloron, cross the territory of the municipality.

history

At the beginning there was a guard at the confluence of the Vert and Gave d'Oloron, from which a castle gradually developed, the foundations of which date from the 10th and 11th centuries. This and the small settlement came into the possession of the Viscounts of Béarn in the 11th century . The Moncade landlord had robbed the merchants who had perished on the old street to the left of the Gave. This made the Bishop of Oloron, Bernard de Morlanne, step in. He turned to Margurite de Mocade, who was the Viscount Gaston VI. who was at war in Spain at the time. Margurite did not hesitate long to depose the landlord of Moumour and to expropriate the castle from him. Like much of the Occitan nobility, the Viscounts of Béarn were allied with the Cathars . After their downfall, the Viscount Gaston VI. excommunicated in 1212 . In 1215 Moumour was given in return for forgiveness to the bishops of Oloron, who set up their summer residence there and kept the property until the French Revolution , with the exception of a few years during the Huguenot Wars . The 1385 census of the Béarn counted 55 households in Moumour and the village was part of the Bailliage of Oloron. The population consisted mainly of clergy and because of this ecclesiastical status Moumour was particularly affected by the Huguenot Wars in the 16th century. Then as now, Moumour is located on one of the Way of St. James to Santiago de Compostela . The passing pilgrims did not linger too long to venerate St. Helena , mother of the Roman Emperor Constantine and patron saint of the community. As in many surrounding villages, a textile manufacture developed in Moumour in the 18th century. At the beginning of the 20th century, the Compagnie du Chemin de fer Pau-Oloron-Mauléon et du Tramway de Bayonne à Biarritz u. a. a local railway line from Oloron-Sainte-Marie to Sauveterre-de-Béarn , which also served Moumour.

Parish Church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste

Parish Church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste

The first church dedicated to John the Baptist existed at the end of the 12th century. As this was partially destroyed in the Huguenot Wars, today's church was rebuilt in the same place in the middle of the 17th century. Around 1730, Bishop de Revol had the church rebuilt. In particular, the current sacristy was built to enlarge the choir . As a result, synods were held and ordinations were celebrated in the church . Until the end of the 19th century the church had four chapels dedicated to John the Baptist, the Virgin Mary , the souls in purgatory and Mary Magdalene . The last two chapels mentioned were in poor condition and due to a lack of maintenance funds, they were demolished between 1890 and 1900. Extensive renovation work took place in the early 1990s. The church houses many remarkable furnishings , including an 18th century altar made of painted and gilded wood, statues made of gilded wood, busts of Popes Benedict VIII and Pius V in the choir, a tabernacle in the Lady Chapel, a holy water font and seven paintings by the painter Jean-Baptiste Smets.

Castle of Moumour

It was first mentioned in the 11th century, damaged in the 16th century during the Huguenot Wars, then rebuilt and rebuilt several times over the years. In the 18th century the castle had a dining room, a lounge, kitchens and an orangery on the ground floor . At the beginning of the French Revolution, the castle was expropriated in 1789 and sold on March 3, 1791 to the Lamothe family, who added one floor and created a park. Nowadays the castle is used as a holiday accommodation with guest rooms.

Of the medieval castle, only the pentagonal keep has survived as a ruin over the centuries. On June 27, 1830, the 23 m high tower was damaged by a lightning strike and the owner family lowered it by eight meters. Its height is only ten meters today compared to 1958, when the tower was 15 meters high. The walls were once 1.3 m thick and covered with slate . At the time of the Middle Ages the tower had three levels, as the consoles show. The ground floor, which is now illuminated by modern windows, only had two simple loopholes at the time . For security reasons, access to the tower is currently walled up.
