history

The community is located on a passage that was carved into the rock during the time of the Roman Empire to get across the Pyrenees . A Roman inscription at the foot of the rock face from the second or third century says that the Duovir of Iluro had the road improved in his second term. The road became a link between the Viscount and later the King of France and contributed to the development of the community.

In 1096 the community was first mentioned in the name form Scot . However, it remained relatively poor in population in the Middle Ages . In the census of 1385 only eight households were counted and the affiliation of the village to the Bailliage des Vicomtes des Aspetals was recorded.

Other toponyms and mentions were:

In the 16th century raised Catherine de Bourbon , the thermal spring out of the community. The associated thermal bath was particularly popular in the 19th century. The peak of the baths business was in the 1930s before it slowly came to a standstill.

Population development

After an initial high of over 800 inhabitants in the first half of the 19th century, the number fell by a total of 87% to around 100 inhabitants during short growth phases by the turn of the millennium. Since then there has been slight growth.

Attractions

Parish church de l'Assomption of Escot
Escot Viaduct
  • Parish church, dedicated to the Assumption . The long building was built in the second half of the 16th century, as evidenced by the inscription with the year 1674 above the lintel of the entrance door. The nave offers space for a single nave . The bell tower as the entrance porch has a roof covered with slate , which is called à l'impériale ( German  imperial ) because its curved, upwardly tapering shape is reminiscent of an imperial crown .
  • Notre-Dame de Bon-Secours chapel , built in the 18th or 19th centuries. In addition to votive offerings and a statue of the Virgin Mary, the chapel contains, among other things, stones that are piled up to form a pyramid . Three putti support the statue on an altar , one kneeling, the other standing upright. Maria wears a pleated dress and a headscarf that covers her hair. The statue comes from the altarpiece of the church in Escot and not from the same period as the putti. The chapel is not in its original place as it had to be relocated due to the changed route of the country road.
  • Escot Viaduct. At the entrance to the Aspetal, a viaduct spans the Gave as part of the former Pau – Canfranc railway line . Its span is 56 m with a total length of 133 m. Construction began in early 1908 and was not without problems. In June 1908, a flood of the Gave d'Aspe tore away two of the six temporary supports, so that the viaduct could not be completed until the following year. The railway line stopped operating in 1970 after a train derailed on another bridge.
  • Keystone over an entrance door. Escot preserves some old houses from the 17th to 19th centuries. The keystone of a round arch of an entrance door of one of these houses has a carved ornament. A Greek cross can be seen above plant motifs , above which a small fish. The motifs could indicate the activity of the owner, whose initials "R" and "C" can be read in the upper corners of the keystone. The year 1800 at the bottom reveals the time of creation.
