From the 16th to the 17th century, two well-known Bearner families lived in the castle of Oroignen, the Abadie d'Oroignen, who gave the castle its name, and the family of the Marquis of Lons . 1655 Orognen became the Barony raised, the next Orognen also Lay and Préchacq-Navarrenx included.

Attractions

Local church

It is dedicated to John the Baptist and was built in the 17th century, in a time after the Huguenot Wars , when most of the Catholic churches were renovated or rebuilt. At the end of the 19th century, the church was restored and enlarged, including the addition of the northern side chapel . The entrance to the church is through a five-story bell tower as an entrance porch, the roof of which is called à l'impériale ( German  imperial ) because its curved shape is reminiscent of an imperial crown . On the spire a is skylights placed on the bell. The floor inside the church is covered with natural stone tiles , the vault of the nave is covered with paneling .

The choir is adorned with an altar and an altarpiece made of gilded wood from the 18th century, which extends on two levels. The middle of the lower level is formed by the tabernacle , on both sides of which two free-standing statuettes can be seen depicting religious people. One of these people can be recognized as John the Baptist, the patron saint of the church. On the upper level above the tabernacle, the gaze falls on a statuette depicting the motif of Mary with the baby Jesus . It is surmounted by a dome formed by three putti heads . On top of this dome is another statuette that embodies Jesus Christ , without clothes, upright and with his arm pointing towards heaven.

The 18th century altar is made of red and gold painted wood and has a curved shape. In the middle there is a painted medallion that shows the baptism of Jesus in the Jordan by John. It is surrounded by golden rocailles , shell- shaped ornaments . In the middle of the wall behind the altar and the top is an oil painting depicting Christ crucified and, on both sides, Mary and the patron saint John.

In the side chapel, which is dedicated to Mary, a painting 1.60 m high and 1.40 m wide can be seen. The frame of the picture is made of gilded wood and decorated with shell-shaped ornaments. In the middle of the picture, Mary appears to St. Dominic , surrounded by clouds and putti. She holds the baby Jesus on her lap, who is presenting a rosary to Dominic. In the lower right corner of the picture you can see a dog with a torch to the right of a globe . This motif alludes to a dream of Dominikus mother, who, according to legend, had a vision of a dog holding a torch with which he lights the world. Two books are shown, commemorating the books that Dominic sold to help the poor.

The church preserves a 17th century holy water font that was for a time reserved only for members of the Cagots . These were a group of people who were discriminated against in Spain and France from the 13th to well into the 19th century and were largely excluded from social life. They could not be denied entry to the church because the Cagots were of Catholic faith. Still, it was unthinkable for the other members of the parish to dip their hands in the same holy water as the Cagots. For this reason, many churches in Béarn have separate holy water stoups. This has the shape of a basin on a hexagonal stone base.

Oroignen Castle

In the district of Orognen, southeast of the town center, a castle was built towards the end of the 16th century, of which only a ruin can be seen today. The d'Abadie d'Oroignen family, originally from Gurs, who had it built, were of higher order within the Parliament of Navarre and as advisers to the French king. The building must usually have reflected the importance of the owners. The building had four floors with twin windows including an attic. The property included outbuildings and a garden with a size of 894 hectares. At the time of the French Revolution, the castle had passed into the possession of the Marquis of Lons. His refusal to give up his privileges and thus his possessions sealed the end of the castle. Remnants of the north and west facades, two corner towers and a wall surface are left to decay from the former splendor. Today you stand in the yard of a commercial enterprise.

Not far from the castle ruins is the building of a former water mill on a canal that is fed by the Gave d'Oloron. The Dogmen Mill belonging to the castle was auctioned off to Vignau de Préchacq for 48,000 livre during the Revolution after it was confiscated .
