Attractions

  • Parish church in Ossas, consecrated to St. Cyprian. It dates from the 17th century, but the current church is the result of a complete restoration in the second half of the 19th century. This gave the church a neo-Gothic style, which is particularly evident in the new door in the entrance porch. During this time, the apse and the window openings of the single nave nave were repaired and new stained glass windows with geometric shapes were installed, the work of the glass painter Auguste Montaut from Oloron . In 1987 the church underwent another restoration. On this occasion a previously hidden inscription came to light above the south side entrance. It reads in German "The French people recognize the highest being and the immortality of the soul". The text corresponds to that of the decree of May 7, 1794, in which, at the instigation of Maximilien de Robespierre, the cult of the highest being was to be given official status. This revolutionary cult was an expression of a deist , i.e. H. no longer purely Christian piety. After Robespierre was overthrown in July 1794, the national convention ceased to enforce the cult and the inscription on the church was covered up. The altarpiece inside the church is made of wood and is held in shades of purple and gold. Decorated columns structure the reredos on two levels, which is decorated with several gilded plant motifs and two figures of saints. The tabernacle is made of the same wood and inserted into the reredos. Two columns with ornate capitals line its door, which is covered by a bas-relief depicting a chalice beneath a sun. The noun sacrum IHS can also be seen on the upper part of the door . A painting with Christ crucified completes the overall work. The church's holy water font consists of a circular basin that rests on a foot in the form of a column. The Lord is represented as a relief several times around the basin. He holds his right hand open as a sign of the blessing of the believers. A perfectly preserved disc-shaped grave stele, called Hilarri , rises up next to the church building. It is provided with the year "1631" of its creation. In the middle of the disk a large paw cross can be seen, which has a resemblance to a Maltese cross . An inscription in Basque surrounds this cross.
