history

On May 12, 1841, the parishes of Ogenne and Camptort merged to form the new parish of Ogenne-Camptort.

Since the Middle Ages Camptort was under a landlord and owned a lay monastery . In the 1385 census of the Béarn, eight households were counted in Camptort and the village, like Ogenne, was part of the Navarrenx Bailliage . In the 17th century the manor was owned by Isaac de Portau, lawyer in the Parliament of Navarre and father of the musketeer Porthos. The fiefdom of Camptort was important because it included access to the Béarn Estates . When Isaac de Portau gave up the manorial power, he caused a hustle and bustle of buying and selling.

Ogenne is first mentioned in the writings in the 11th century, and in 1235 a fortified camp is mentioned. Ogenne was already bigger than Camptort in the Middle Ages, because the census in 1385 counted 29 households in Ogenne. In 1782 the naturalist Pierre Bernard Palassou acquired the manorial power. His grave stele is in front of the parish church of Ogenne.

Attractions

  • Parish Church of Saint-Jacques in Ogenne. It dates from the 18th century and has undergone numerous renovations over the centuries. Between 1849 and 1851 the single nave nave was extended by 4 m and the bell gable, which was in poor condition, was replaced by a bell tower . The bell tower had to be restored or rebuilt as early as 1864 under the direction of the architect Jean-Baptiste Gascogne from Navarrenx. At the same time, the first of the two side chapels was built. The second chapel was built towards the end of the 19th century. The northern one is flanked by a separate cemetery chapel. Restoration work took place in 1978. The main altar is located in the choir behind an altar table made of untreated wood. It is part of the first equipment after the church was built. The delicacy of the sculptures made with fine gold contrasts with the simplicity of the rest of the design of the choir. The tabernacle consists of two levels and is framed with wings. Fully plastic statuettes alternate with serpent columns. The level above is filled by a small structure with a dome at its top. In the middle is crucified Christ depicted. Another altar from the 18th century, entirely in Baroque style, is located in one of the side chapels. It is dedicated to Mary , the mother of Jesus Christ . Your initials "M" and "A" are entwined on the front of the altar on a green background that imitates marble . On the tabernacle, in addition to the symbol of the sacrament on the door, numerous heads of cherubins and ornaments are incorporated. The baroque decor is completed by two serpentine columns wrapped with vine tendrils. In a niche of the church there is a statue of the Madonna with baby Jesus. The richly detailed sculpture made of gilded wood is placed in front of a blue background with stars. Mary is holding the baby Jesus upright on a globe.
  • Parish church in Camptort, consecrated to St. Stephen and built in the 18th century. The building has a single nave with a side chapel and a bell tower above the entrance porch. Its roof with a high pitch is covered with slate . Beautiful furnishings are kept in the interior, a picture of St. Stephen, an altarpiece made of gilded wood in the side chapel and a Madonna, also made of gilded wood.
  • Estate. A property from the 18th century is located above the center of the municipality, on a hill. Its simple facade and round tower give the appearance of a mansion. The walls plastered with lime give it a brilliant white and accentuate the edges of the stone windows . Dormer windows give the building a typical Bearner appearance.
