Vielleségure is a French municipality with 375 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the department of Pyrénées-Atlantiques in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine . It belongs to the Arrondissement of Pau and the canton of Le Cœur de Béarn . The inhabitants are called Vielleségurois .

Vielleségure is located in the historic province of Béarn at the foot of the Pyrenees , which forms the Pyrénées-Atlantiques department with the French Basque Country . The community is ten kilometers south of Lacq . The Saleys , a tributary of the Gave d'Oloron , rises on the municipal boundary. The Laâ , a tributary of the Gave de Pau , has its source in the municipality of Vielleségure. Both rivers flow into the Gaves Réunis and later into the Adour , which flows into the Atlantic Ocean at Bayonne .

history

The name Vielleségure appeared in 1343 as la bastide de Viel-Segure , around 1350 as Sent-Bertran de Viel-Segure , in 1391 as Bielesegure and 1572 as Bielasegura .

The origins of Vielleségure date back to a time when the Vascons protested against the Romans in a place known as "éperon barré", which was built on a hill. In 1339 a fortress built by Gaston II was abandoned and modernized and expanded by Gaston II (also called Fébus ) by order of January 26, 1372, so that it could be used in the Hundred Years War .

According to Paul Raymond , Vielleségure comprised 56 families in 1385 and was dependent on the Bailliage in Lagor and Pardies .
