history

Maucor belonged to Morlaàs for a long time and developed relatively late compared to other communities in the Béarn. A Count Unaud of Maucor was mentioned in an 11th century script that tells the history of Saint-Sever Abbey . In 1402 the village was mentioned in a census , in 1481 there lived a landlord Francès de la Tour de Maucor. Obviously he gave his fiefdom his name, in contrast to the usual practice in the Béarn, in which a landlord took the name of his fiefdom. The manorial rule of Maucor passed successively to the Lamothe, Lostal, de Labaig, and Mesplès families. In the 18th century, Pierre de Lacassaigne-Maucor sold the fiefdom to Baron Jean Gratian de Laussat, a district official in the financial administration.

Toponyms and mentions of Maucor were:

  • Maucoo de Morlaas (1402, census in the Béarn),
  • Maucoo, dejuus Morlaas (15th century, copy book of the archdeaconate of Ossau, sheet 203),
  • Mauquo (around 1540, manuscript collection from the 16th to 18th centuries),
  • Mauco (1750, map by Cassini ) and
  • Mauco (1793 and 1801, Notice Communale and Bulletin des lois, respectively ).

Attractions

Parish Church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste
  • Parish church dedicated to John the Baptist . There was a simple church in the parish since the 13th century. The Huguenot Wars did not leave it without a trace, so that it had to be demolished in the 17th century due to the danger of collapse. Martin de Lacassagne, Bishop of Lescar and brother of the then landlord of Maucor, ordered the parish church to be rebuilt. Due to a lack of funds, it was not until 1867 that the current church was erected south of the site of the old building and in the middle of the cemetery according to plans by the architect Lévy. It was restored in 1901. The single nave nave is closed off on its west side by a three-walled apse . The bell tower above the entrance porch, which dominates the east side of the church, is opened on three sides by large round arches with classicist frames. Inside the church you can see three stained glass windows , works by the glass painter Gustave Pierre Dagrant from 1902. They depict John the Baptist, St. Joseph with the baby Jesus and Mary with the baby Jesus . The church also houses an altar from the 19th century, the reminds of the pilgrimage to Emmaus .
