Pardies is a French municipality with 849 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Pyrénées-Atlantiques in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine (before 2016: Aquitaine ). The municipality belongs to the Arrondissement of Pau (until 2016: Arrondissement Oloron-Sainte-Marie ) and the canton of Le Cœur de Béarn (until 2015: Canton Monein ).

The name in the Gascognischen language is Pardias . It means "pastureland with low walls". The inhabitants are called Pardisiens and Pardisiennes .

history

Paul Raymond, archivist and historian of the 19th century, noted that Pardies was a former archpriesthood of the diocese of Lescar . In 1343 the Bailliage of Pardies also included Saint-Laurent, now a district of Abos, and the fief of Idernes. In the 1385 census of the Béarn, 61 households were counted. The Bailliage of Lagor and Pardies now included Abos, Bésingrand, Mourenx , Noguères, Os-Marsillon, Tarsacq and Vielleségure . In the municipality there was a lay monastery , vassal of the Viscount of Béarn and the personal estate of the Viscount. The municipality of Pardies developed from a small fortified bastide with an even grid of streets, ditches and ramparts. In the Middle Ages , Pardies was located at the exit of the Bésingrand ferry and became one of the seven toll booths on the Béarn. The importance of the community can be seen from the fact that it was one of the 24 villages with seats at the Supreme Court. Pardies was also the main seat of a notary's office, the district of which included Abidos , Abos, Bésingrand, Lahourcade, Mourenx, Noguères, Os-Marsillon, Parbayse, Pardies and Tarsacq. In the 17th century Pardies had market rights.

Population development

The first peak of the population of around 930 was seen in the first half of the 19th century. It then reduced to around 650 inhabitants by the 1860s, and subsequently increased to 770 in the years to come. Subsequently, the community again experienced a phase of stagnation in the number of inhabitants up to the 1940s to around 500. This was followed by strong growth, particularly in the 1960s, with a maximum of 1060 inhabitants in the 1970s. Since then, the number of inhabitants of Pardies has decreased again.

  • Parish church dedicated to John the Baptist . It was built in 1831 according to plans by the architect Jean Latapie. The interior was renovated in 1894. Behind the classicist gable facade extends the nave with a false barrel vault , which is divided into a main aisle and a south aisle . A two-story building, in which the sacristy and ancillary rooms are set up, adjoins the flat apse . The square bell tower is built over the apse. It has sound openings of the bell chamber in the shape of a round arch on all four sides. His helmet has a pyramid roof , which, like his main roof, is covered with slate . In front of the church there is a memorial to commemorate the soldiers of the community who died in the First World War . On an irregularly worked base stands a column, which is closed at the top with a capital decorated with foliage . The inscription on the column "To the children of Pardies, who died for the fatherland 1914-1919" commemorates the fallen. At the top rises the bust of a poilus who looks to the horizon. This sculpture is the work of Henri Poublan (1871–1931).
