history

The name of the municipality means le bois d'Arros ( German  "Forest of Arros" ) and indicates the geographical location in a wooded, hilly landscape.

The Viscount Gaston III. , called Fébus, founded the place in 1349 with the intention of settling the uninhabited areas between the Gave de Pau and the Gave d'Oloron . In the Béarn census of 1385, 71 households were counted in Bosc d'Arros , which corresponds to around 300 inhabitants, and it is noted that the municipality is in the Bailliage of Pau. The relatively high number of households shows a certain economic importance of the village during this period. There was a blacksmith , a miller and the landlord's water mill .

Further toponyms were subsequently le Boscq d'Arros (1538, manuscript from the 16th to 18th centuries) and le Boisdarros (1767, Estates ordinance). On the map of Cassini 1750, Bosdarros is entered as Bosc d'Arros . During the French Revolution in 1793, Bosdarros was already used in its current form, eight years later during the French Consulate as Bos-d'Arros and finally Bosdarros .

In 1888, Haut-de-Bosdarros split off as an independent municipality. The Gest river forms the border to this day.

Population development

After a peak of almost 2,000 inhabitants in the middle of the 19th century, the number fell by a total of around 60% to just over 600 by the 1960s. Since then the trend has reversed due to the geographical proximity to Pau and the population has increased to over 1,000 again.

Buildings

Church dedicated to Orientius , who was Bishop of Augusta Ausciorum in the 5th century. It was built at the beginning of the 16th century on a byway of the Way of St. James to Santiago de Compostela . The two Gothic entrances to the north and east date from this period , as the church is not oriented to the east as usual. The north portal with the keel arch has been reworked several times over the centuries. Its cornice appears to have been relocated , the outer ends of the fleurons and pinnacles shortened. The large tympanum was possibly with a network of fish bladders ( French Mouchette ) and Four Fit ( French soufflets of two circular arcs and two ogee whose form to a) bellows reminded decorated. The small tympanum is decorated with two kneeling figures. On the right is an angel with a banner , the left figure holds a martyr's palm and could represent the patron saint . A gable flower crowns the pointed arch . Inside the church, the choir is occupied by an altarpiece with a large painting from the 16th century that shows an episode of the patron saint when he gave up his hermitage at the moment when the previous bishop of Auch died and he was appointed as his successor saw.
