Saint-Girons-en-Béarn is a French municipality with 157 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Pyrénées-Atlantiques in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine (before 2016: Aquitaine ). The municipality belongs to the arrondissement of Pau and the canton of Orthez et Terres des Gaves et du Sel (until 2015: canton of Orthez ).

The name of the parish can be traced back to a martyr from Aire-sur-l'Adour from the fourth century or to a missionary of the same name who evangelized the nearby Chalosse in the fifth century .

The residents are called Gironsais and Gironsaises .

history

A settlement in Gallo-Roman times is evidence of a small fortification. Administratively, the village belonged to the Bailliage of Lagor and Pardies in the Middle Ages . The community became known for its medicinal baths with water from sulfur and iron springs, which were operated from the 19th century until the 1920s.

In 2006 the commune, formerly Saint-Girons, was renamed Saint-Girons-en-Béarn .

Attractions

  • Parish church dedicated to the Apostle Matthew . It was built in 1821 and 1822 to replace an earlier church that was located at the cemetery below the center. The old church was connected to a lay monastery in the Middle Ages . The present church was restored in 1888, and a porch was added over the entrance in the 1920s. The nave has a nave . A small bell tower with a slate- covered, polygonal helmet rises on the north-west corner of the building . On all four outer corners there are roof riders that look like small, pyramid-shaped roof helmets and have small crosses at their tips.
