Baigts-de-Béarn is located in the Adours catchment area on the right bank of the Gave de Pau . Two of its tributaries, the Arriou de Bardy and the Ruisseau de Montlong, have their source in the municipality. Another tributary, the Ruisseau de Lataillade, forms a large part of the northern municipal boundary.

history

The original inhabitants of Baigts-de-Béarn benefited from the preferred geographical location on a hill above the wooded valley of the Gave de Pau. This is evidenced by the existence of a fortified camp in prehistory . During the Gallo-Roman period, the municipality was an important stop on two major Roman trade routes. At the end of the reign of Gaston VII , Viscount of Béarn, in the 13th century, a new curtain wall was built around the town as a sign of its growing importance as an official residence. At that time there was a notary, a surgeon and four local nobles among the inhabitants .

Baigts is mentioned in the 13th century as Baigs in the fors de Béarn , a collection of official texts from the Vice- County of Béarn. In 1385, 59 households were counted in a census . Further forms of the place name in the scriptures were subsequently: Baigx (1318), Bags (1343), Bachs (1505), Batz (around 1540), Vagtz (1548) and Baitz (1582). Baigts became a center of the Reformation in the region in the 16th century and therefore suffered particularly from the consequences of the Huguenot Wars . On the map of Cassini in 1750 the community is as Baigts entered during the French Revolution in 1793 as Baigt 1801 then when Baigts out. To avoid confusion, the addition "de-Béarn" was officially added to the name in the 20th century.

Population development

The number of around 1000 inhabitants lasted until the last quarter of the 19th century. Then a downward trend began until the 1950s, at the end of which the number decreased by around 40%. Since then, the number has increased again by a total of more than 50%, which can be explained by the dynamics of the nearby Orthez.
