history
The place was already settled in antiquity, as evidenced by the discoveries of a Gallo-Roman villa and the foundations of an oppidum .
Bentayou appears in the writings under the toponyms Bentaio (12th century, copy book by Morlaàs ), Bentayoo (1385, census in Béarn), Ventayou (1547), Bentanhou (1614), Saint Jean de Bentayou (1675, Reformation in Béarn) and Bentayon (1737, census of the Baronate of Maure). Serée appears as Sere (1602) and Sainte-Catherine de Séré (1675, Reformation in the Béarn). In the census of 1385 28 households were counted in Bentayou, eight households in Sérée and it was noted that the two settlements are in the Bailliage of Montaner .
The church of Sérée belonged to the Commandery of the Order of St. John of Caubin and Morlaàs in the 18th century . On the map of Cassini 1750, Bentayou is entered with the current form of the name, Sérée as Seré . During the French Revolution in 1793 is Sérée under Serée out during the French Consulate eight years later next Sérée as Serçe .
During the High Middle Ages , Bentayou was protected by a fortification around a mound castle called Saint Jean de Bentayou . The feudal lordship of the two villages was divided up to the 17th century. After that, both villages became dependent on the feudal lords and barons of Maure, which in a certain way initiated the later merger in 1845.
Population development
In the course of the 19th century, the community developed rapidly due to the progressive development in agriculture. After a high of almost 500 inhabitants when the two former municipalities merged, the number steadily declined until the 1960s to a stable level of around 100 inhabitants.

Attractions
- Church in Bentayou, dedicated to Catherine of Alexandria . The original church was built on a moth in the 12th century and destroyed in the Huguenot Wars in 1570 . It is still shown as a ruin on Cassini's map from 1750. It lost its Romanesque structure when it was rebuilt in the 19th century. The current building consists of a main nave and two side aisles with neo-Gothic pointed arches . The church tower protrudes from the slate roof above the entrance. The east side is closed with a flat apse . Inside there are items from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, which are registered as national cultural assets.
- Former church of Sérée, dedicated to Lawrence of Rome . The original church was destroyed in an attack by Protestant troops in 1569 and was not rebuilt until the end of the 17th century. Obviously the construction lasted until 1732, because a cantilever arch recognizable by a corresponding inscription was completed in that year. The front gable in the style of the 17th century above the entrance bears a Maltese cross , a visible sign of the dependence on the Church of the Order of St. John. The church is single-nave. The slate roof is closed on the west side with a protruding bell gable. With the merger of the two communities, the church was downgraded as a chapel. Inside there are items from the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, which are registered as national cultural assets. One example is the 17th century altarpiece , the painting of which depicts Saint Paul and the patron saint of the church on both sides of the crucified Jesus Christ . Laurentius can be recognized as a martyr with rust as an attribute .
- Excavation finds from Gallo-Roman times. Near the church of Bentayou, between the cemetery and the adjacent fields, the foundations of a villa were discovered during an archaeological dig. They suggest a building measuring 60 m × 30 m. A fragment of a mosaic has also come to light near the church . It covered the ground over a length of 1 m and a width of 80 cm and is now kept in the Bearner Museum in Pau. Depressions not far from where the villa was located suggest the existence of a private bathhouse, with which the houses of rich Romans were usually furnished.
- Foundations Saint Jean de Bentayou . The medieval fortification appears as a further development of an early historical defensive system at this point. The medieval complex has a rectangular floor plan with a mound in the center four meters high. It is surrounded by a moat and a wall made of pebbles ten meters high and one meter thick. Remains of a tower as a bell tower of a Saint Jean church , dated to the 14th century, suggest the existence of a castle.
