history

Since the 12th century, Luc and Armau were under a commandery of the Order of Malta , which was affiliated to Caubin and Morlaàs before 1540 . The commander and at the same time the landlord of Luc-Armau had access to the Béarn Estates Assembly . In 1381 the two villages Luc and Armau united under one manorial rule. The census in 1385 counted four households in Luc and one single household in Armau, Luc under the Bailliage of Montaner , Armau under that of the archpriesthood of Lembeye . Despite the moderate size of the villages at that time, they gained a certain importance in the Middle Ages through the course of one of the pilgrimage routes to Santiago de Compostela through the communities, which probably follows the route of a former Roman road from Beneharnum ( Lescar ) to Augusta Auscorum ( Auch ). The former municipalities of Luc and Armau officially merged in 1831 to form the new municipality of Luc-Armau.

Attractions

  • Parish church in Luc, dedicated to St. Blaise. A parish church has been mentioned since the 11th century, the original building of the current church dates from the second half of the 12th century. It was under the Commandery of the Order of Malta, which was opposite. Despite numerous changes in the 18th and 19th centuries, the church has retained individual elements from the original era. The south aisle was added in 1642, as evidenced by an inscription on the keystone of an arch . The bell tower was redesigned in 1724, the north aisle restored or rebuilt in 1816. The choir and sacristy were rebuilt in 1858 according to plans by the architect Poublan from Pau. Ten double capitals , which presumably come from an old monastery , have been newly installed in the north aisle. Many of the furnishings date from the 17th to 19th centuries and are registered as national cultural assets.
  • Parish church in Armau, consecrated to the apostle Johannes . The church was rebuilt in the 17th century at the Armau cemetery and rebuilt in the 18th century. The single nave nave has a bell gable . Many of the furnishings date from the 17th to 19th centuries and are registered as national cultural assets.
  • Former Commandery of the Order of Malta. The hospital for the care of passing pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela was destroyed in 1557, the castle and commandery were subsequently no longer the seat of the commander. At the beginning of the 18th century, the commander Charles de Marquein de Rochefort left the current building rebuild as an estate. The two round towers that frame the residential wing, the window openings on the first floor, the roof windows from the 16th century and a coat of arms on the entrance door are all that remains of the former commandery.
  • Armau Castle. A simple castle was built by the noble Germenaud Lassède family in the 16th and 17th centuries on a strategic place on a hill on the border with Bigorre . It is entered on the map of Cassini as “Germenaut”. The castle was rebuilt in the 19th century and around 1900. The two rectangular towers that enclose the residential wing have been preserved from the original building. Today the castle has the function of a farm. A dovecote from the 17th century, like the castle, was heavily redesigned towards the end of the 19th century. The hexagonal structure rests on seven sandstone pillars and gives the impression of a Swiss chalet with its six gable facades.
