history

In the copy book of the abbey of Saint-Pé-de-Bigorre the moth Castrum Cadelionense was mentioned in the 11th century , which was probably built on a former camp from the Gallo-Roman period . This castle was so valuable due to its exposed geographical location that it served twice, in 1170 and 1212, as a pledge to the King of Aragon . In the 12th century, the landlord of Cadillon held an important position at the court of the Viscount of Béarn. As a result, a second castle was built at the foot of the moth.

Further toponyms and mentions of the parish were subsequently Cadelho (1104, copy book of the diocese of Lescar ), Cadelo (1131, copy book of Morlaàs ), Cadelon (1170, according to Pierre de Marcas book Histoire de Béarn ), Cadellio (1344, documents of the Vicomté von Béarn), Cadalhoo and Cadelhoo (1385 and 1402, respectively, censuses ) and Cadilhon (1736, census by Conchez ).

On the map of Cassini 1750, Cadillon is entered in its current name.

Population development

After a peak of 479 inhabitants in the middle of the 19th century, the number of inhabitants fell by a total of around 80% to below 100 during short phases of stabilization up to the turn of the millennium. Since then it has stabilized.

Attractions

  • Local church dedicated to Martin von Tours and Maria , the mother of Jesus. It was originally built as a Romanesque building, probably in the 12th century. Confirmed assumptions are the construction on the ruins of a castle from the 11th century and the reuse of one of the towers of the former curtain wall in the western part of the building. The Romanesque apse comes from the chapel of the earlier castle. The church was probably destroyed during the Huguenot Wars and rebuilt in stages between the 16th and 19th centuries. A restoration in the 19th century brought to light the Romanesque choir , which until then had been hidden behind plaster. There is a 19th century Pietà in the church, the work of an artist from Ghent . The statue made of painted terracotta shows a painful Mary with the body of Jesus Christ removed from the cross on her lap.
  • Statue of the Immaculate Conception . In 1891 a mission was carried out to counter the growing abandonment of Christianity in rural areas. In memory of this mission, the parish had a statue of the Immaculate Conception placed on a stele . Mary is shown here in a praying position, her eyes directed towards heaven. As traditional clothing she wears a white dress and a blue stole.
