geography
The municipality is located in the historic province of Béarn , eight kilometers southeast of Pau and about 38 kilometers northwest of Lourdes in the foothills of the Pyrenees . In the west of the municipality flows the Gave de Pau , a tributary of the Adour . Assat borders on Meillon and Lée in the north, Ousse in the northeast, Artigueloutan in the east, Bordes in the southeast, Baliros in the south and Rontignon in the west.
The Gave de Pau partially forms the western boundary of Assat. The municipal area comprises part of the three-kilometer-wide river valley of the Gave de Pau, along the eastern edge of which the Lagoin River flows. In the Gave de Pau valley, some irrigation and drainage canals as well as mill inflows were created, such as the Canal d'Assat . To the northeast, the municipality extends over the course of the Lagoin and extends over a wooded hilly landscape ( Bois d'Assat ). This is the highest point in the municipality at 324 m above sea level. In addition to the village of Assat, the municipality includes the districts of Laforgue, Ruchelle, Bayne and La Judée .

Attractions
- Assat Castle ( Château d'Assat ) is located in the western part of the village, north of the cemetery, on the site of the old Romanesque church of Assat. The building with a footprint of 21 × 16 m and a pyramid roof is flanked by a rectangular tower. The origins of the castle (the dungeon) date back to the 12th century. Today the castle is privately owned.
- Market hall from the 19th century
- Suspension bridge over the Gave de Pau from 1938, restored in 2005
- War memorial from 1923 made of white stone with an attached crucifix
- Community hall in the former girls' school built in 1925 in Art Deco style
St. Severus Church
- The church of St. Severus ( Église Saint-Sèvère ) was given its current form in 1873, when a reconstruction from donations from the community took place, with a sacristy being added. The old church was built in 1624 and replaced what was probably a Romanesque previous building, which was too far from the village center, too small and dilapidated. The new church was built, among other things, from limestone that was quarried in nearby Arudy . The bell tower has three levels. The church windows come from the Louis Victor Gesta (1828–1894) glass workshop in Toulouse . The tympanum of the main portal shows a relief of the coronation of the Virgin Mary.
In 1895, the sacristy received seven valuable paintings from the heirs of a resident of Assat who became rich in banking in Mexico.
Economy and Infrastructure
In parts, Assat has more of a suburban character for the nearby large city of Pau with its typical shopping malls and car dealerships. Away from the main streets, Assat looks rather rural. There are 35 farms in the municipality (growing of grain and vegetables, dairy farming, horse and pig breeding).
The municipality of Assat has good transport connections. The D 937 trunk road connects Assat with the city of Pau. On the northern outskirts of Pau there is a connection to the A64 autoroute . Assat station is on the Toulouse – Bayonne railway line .
