history

The geographical location in the Lées valley has led to settlement since ancient times . The 1385 census of the Béarn counted 21 households in Tadousse and the village was part of the Bailliage of Lembeye . Cagots also lived in the village , a group of people who were discriminated against in Spain and France from the 13th to well into the 19th century for reasons that are still unknown today and who were largely excluded from social life. During the 14th century, Tadousse, like other villages in the region, was set on fire by the troops of the Count of Armagnac . The village had a fortification with ditches and walls on three sides.

Like Tadousse, Ussau was first mentioned in the scriptures in the 12th century. A castle was built on the initiative of Queen Jeanne d'Albret of Navarre in the 16th century. In 1672 Ussau was by decree of the French king to Baronat charged that the Vicomte was subject of Béarn.

In 1831 the municipalities of Tadousse and Ussau merged to form the municipality of Tadousse-Ussau.

Attractions

  • Parish Church of Notre-Dame . Despite its elongated shape, the church shows a certain massiveness, which is probably due to the architecture of a building with a defensive function, which was necessary during the troubled times during the Huguenot Wars . The present church is essentially from the 17th century. The long building contains a nave and has a long roof that is covered with flat tiles. The square bell tower , which, like the southern entrance portal, was built in the 18th century, has a helmet covered with slate . The church houses a wide variety of furnishings from the 17th to 20th centuries that are registered as national cultural assets.
  • Ussau Castle. The original castle was built in the 16th century as the residence of the landlord Jean d'Idron. In the following years it came into the possession of the Marques family and then the Béarn-Abère family. In the second half of the 18th century, the Périer family had the current castle built. She also had a watermill , which was built in 1749, as evidenced by a corresponding date on the keystone of the arch of the water outlet. The castle passed into the hands of the Sabatier family and eventually belonged to Bernard Nabonne, a writer from Béarn. The living quarters of the castle have two floors and an attic that is covered with a hipped roof. There is a balustrade at the back of the building . Today the castle is privately owned and not open to the public. It was in disrepair when the National Heritage listing was updated in 1990.
