Pouliacq is a French municipality with 54 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Pyrénées-Atlantiques in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine (before 2016: Aquitaine ). The municipality belongs to the Arrondissement of Pau and the canton of Terres des Luys et Coteaux du Vic-Bilh (until 2015: canton Thèze ).

history

A church from the 12th century and a noble seat belonged to a. at that time to the village. In the Middle Ages , the municipality also had a quarter that was inhabited by Cagots . These formed a group of people who from the 13th to well into the 19th century were discriminated against in Spain and France for reasons still unknown and largely excluded from social life. Thimothée de Caplane, Baron von Mondebat , rebuilt the aristocratic residence in 1658, which was henceforth called the castle.

Parish Church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste
  • Parish church dedicated to John the Baptist . The very simple church originally dates from the 12th century and belonged to the diocese of Aire . Its southern windows and entrance date from the 16th century. In 1898 restoration work was carried out, as evidenced by a corresponding year engraved on the threshold of the entrance. The single-nave nave is closed off by a bell gable characteristic of the churches in the region . The main altar of the church dates from the 18th century and is dedicated to John the Baptist, whose statue dominates the work. The altar is a rectangular, hollow, over two meters wide sarcophagus altar made of walnut wood, which is made from one piece. It is decorated with gold-plated relief ornaments and rocailles . Cherubins are put on and semicircular sideboards are attached to both sides of the altar. Like many other churches, this parish church also houses a statue of the Virgin Mary in traditional iconography . She is shown upright and in a praying position with her hands closed. She wears a long white dress, a blue stole and a rosary . A statuette of St. Anthony of Padua can also be seen inside the church on a pedestal in a corner of the wall. He is shown here as a poor man with his main attribute , the habit of a Franciscan made of coarse, brown wool, with a cord closed with three knots at the waist . Antony carries the baby Jesus on an open book.
  • Caplane Castle. It is located on an agricultural estate of 22 hectares with a water mill and a fish pond. The former aristocratic residence was rebuilt in 1658 by Thimothée de Caplane on the occasion of the establishment of the Baronate of Mondebat. The castle subsequently belonged to the Damen Tavernier before it was sold during the French Revolution . Restored in the 19th century, the residential wing was partially demolished at the beginning of the 20th century. The paneling went to the Pedelabat house in Thèze , the entrance portal to Séby . The castle is registered as a national treasure and is not open to the public. On the area is u. a. a dovecote on the roof of a barn. It dates from the 17th century and the facade has the shape of a triangular pediment, which is interrupted by 38 niches and a porthole in the middle. In the times of the Ancien Régimes , the keeping of dovecotes was reserved for the nobles only, and the number of pigeon nests was proportional to the reputation of the owner.
