Viellenave-d'Arthez is a French municipality with 205 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Pyrénées-Atlantiques in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine (before 2016: Aquitaine ). The municipality belongs to the Arrondissement of Pau and the canton of Artix et Pays de Soubestre (until 2015: canton of Arthez-de-Béarn ).

The name Vialenave is in the Gascognischen language Vielanava ( German  Neustadt ). In 1956 the addition “d'Arthez” was added to distinguish between communities of the same name.

The inhabitants are called Vialenavois and Vielleavoises .

Vlichenave-d'Arthez is located about 20 km northwest of Pau in the historic province of Béarn .

history

The area was already settled in early history , as is shown by finds from a total of five barrows around Vlichenave-d'Arthez. The Gramont family founded the village as a bastide in the 14th century , but its development began rather slowly, because the census in Béarn in 1385 only counted six houses. The village belonged to the Bailliage of Pau.

Attractions

  • Peyredaha. It is a boulder made of conglomerate . It was deposited there in the last glacial period and consists of sedimentary rock encased in rubble. In the Middle Ages , the rock was used as a boundary stone for pasture areas. But there were also several legends about him. One said that whoever lifted it should find a hundred thalers underneath. Another that it was the missing piece of the Orthez Bridge that the devil could never move.
