history

In Gallo-Roman times , the village benefited from its location on an important Roman road . Located in the Middle Ages on the border between the Viscounts of Dax and Béarn, it finally came to Béarn in 1193 after it was conquered by Gaston IV of Béarn , known as "the Crusader". The pastor of the community was still subordinate to the diocese of Dax . The manor was established and for a time belonged to the Gassion family. This was an influential family, which gives an indication of the wealth and attractiveness of the place at that time. The 1385 census of Béarn counted 37 households in Ramous. The village was under the Bailliage of Rivière-Gave , an archpriesthood of the diocese of Dax at the time.

On January 1, 1973, the municipalities of Puyoô, Bellocq and Ramous merged to form the new municipality of Puyoô-Bellocq-Ramous. On January 1, 1984, this merger was reversed.

Attractions

Parish Church of Saint-Aignan
  • Parish church dedicated to Aignan of Orléans . The south side of the nave and the chapel attached to it show an old, irregular masonry bond and are therefore regarded as remnants of the original building. In the second half of the 19th century, a decision was made together with the pastor Loustalet-Bladé to enlarge the church and build a bell tower . At that time, this work was part of an initiative to beautify houses of God, which was supported by the state and church. Around 1866 the choir was embellished with wall paintings that are no longer visible today. The interior was furnished from 1914 to 1918. In 1922, four stained glass windows with religious personalities were created by master glass painter Pierre Arcencam from Pau, and around 1960 further decorative stained glass windows by Jean Lesquibe from Anglet . The bell tower of today's church is built as an entrance porch, with a baptistery on its side. In addition to this, today's church has two other side chapels. An inscription in Latin is engraved on the cornice above the entrance to the church: “Dominum in templo sancto suo venite adoremus” ( German come to  worship the Lord in his holy place of worship ). On all four sides of the bell tower, light falls through twin windows and an oculus above . The tower is covered by a polygonal helmet , which was last rebuilt in 1970, and roof turrets on all four outer corners.
