Navailles Angos Saint-Armou Lasclaveries

Astis is located in the Adours catchment area . Its tributary, the Luy , flows past the eastern municipal boundary. Its tributary, the Basta, has its source in the municipality.

history

At the mouth of a stream in the Luy on the eastern edge of the municipality, the remains of a fortified camp can be seen, called "Camp de la Motte". The characteristics of the mound at the site suggest that it was dated to the 12th or 13th century. The large size also allows the possibility that the camp is of prehistoric origin. The camp is listed as “La Motte” on the Carte de Cassini in the 18th century.

Paul Raymond, archivist and historian of the 19th century, noted the mention of the settlement under the name Estis in 1385 on the occasion of a census in the Béarn.

The Baron de Navailles owned the fiefdom of Astis in the Middle Ages and exercised the judiciary. There was a lay monastery whose owner received a tithe and held certain ecclesiastical rights (e.g. regular place in the church choir , first place in processions , a private chapel , burial place in the church). The lay monastery was apparently divided several times, since in 1734 several people referred to themselves as the Abbot of Astis.

Population development

After the peak of 232 inhabitants in the mid-19th century, the number had more than halved by the 1970s. Due to the proximity to Pau, the population development has since experienced an enormous dynamic and has more than tripled.
