history

The fortified moth was mentioned in the records from the 11th century. Gaston Fébus , Viscount of Béarn, recognized the strategically important location and gave the landlord of Monpezat 40 florins to renovate the castle. The census of 1385 counted ten households in Monpezat, including a lay monastery that was later converted into a castle within the wall of the Motte. Monpezat was part of the Lembeye Bailliage . Like many other places in the Béarn, Monpezat also had a spring whose water has been said to have miraculous effects since the Middle Ages . The water from this spring, called San Yan , was said to have a multiple healing and protective effect on children and until the 1930s it was the custom to place cloths soaked with the water on the children's bodies , especially on St. John's Day.

On June 20, 1842, Monpezat and Bétracq were combined to form the municipality of Monpézat-Bétrac, and in 1874 Bétracq became independent again.

Toponyms and mentions of Monpezat were:

  • Parish Church consecrated to Lawrence of Rome . It was built in the middle of the 12th century in the area of the medieval motte and has been able to retain its Romanesque architectural elements of the entrance portal , nave and apse to the present day. The portal is on the south side and has protruding archivolts , the sculptures of which are now badly damaged. The nave has a central nave and a side aisle, which were added in the 16th and 17th centuries. After the church, like most sacred buildings in the Béarn, suffered from the devastation of the Huguenot Wars , it was rebuilt in the 17th and 18th centuries. The bell tower was built after 1879. Inside, items from the 17th to 19th centuries are kept that are registered as national cultural assets.
