Nevertheless, in the 1385 census of the Béarn, a remarkable 48 households were counted and it was noted that the village belonged to the Bailliage of Lagor and Pardies. Parish Church of Sainte-Agathe in Lahourcade

Parish Church of Lahourcade

It was built in the 12th century and is dedicated to Agatha of Catania . The originally Romanesque church has undergone several renovations over the centuries . Its multi-storey, fortified bell tower has a baroque onion hood .

The entrance on the south side dates from the 18th century and was probably created at the same time as the onion dome of the bell tower. The two door leaves are made of wood and are densely covered with nails. They are framed by pilasters of the Ionic order as a basement , which carry a tooth-cut frieze and a large, round gable . Between the frieze and the capitals of the pilasters, figures, half quadrupeds, half birds, are carved on the vertical surfaces on both sides. These mythical creatures come from ancient times and were very common in the Middle Ages , as well as during the Renaissance and later, as seen in this example. A small rose window with tracery breaks through the facade near the entrance . The stones of the rose window, worked out with rods, form a rotating motif, while the spaces in between are filled with simple glass windows. The style of the rose window suggests that it was made in the 14th century when the church was enlarged.

The main altar of the church dates from the 19th century and is divided into three fields at its front, which are separated by narrow, protruding columns, the two outer ones are twin columns. Fields and columns are painted with a light gray paint that imitates a marble structure . The fields of the altar bear a motif of gilded quatrefoils that enclose a cross. Which is on the altar Tabernacle , gilded and worked out with a slightly different style. The central part shows the crucified Jesus Christ , framed by narrow columns, niches with statuettes on both sides of the shrine . Two wings emerge to the left and right of the shrine, decorated with garlands and in the middle with a medallion with figures as a relief . Above the door, the beholder's gaze falls on another crucifixion scene, flanked by two angels , worked out as a relief. A cross forms the upper end of the tabernacle, behind which an altarpiece with columns and a painting in the center rises.

The church has a side altar from the 19th century, dedicated to the Virgin Mary , in the classical style. As with the main altar, its front is divided into three fields, which are separated by protruding columns, the painting of which imitates a material made of lapis lazuli . The altar base, on the other hand, is painted with a gray paint that imitates a marble structure. The corners of the fields on the altar are decorated in the form of irises , in the middle there are ovals that enclose a Sacred Heart of Jesus . The retable of the altar, architecturally built and made entirely of wood, also dates from the 19th century. Its style and the colors imitating marble harmonize with the associated altar. The base of the reredos, which is decorated with two circles and a square, has two side pilasters of Doric order with a fluted structure. Their painting takes up a style element of the altar, a material made of lapis lazuli is also imitated here. The pilasters have an architrave and a gilded cornice , from which acroters with decorative motifs stand out at the top . Above is the motif of the Eye of Providence , an eye surrounded by a halo and enclosed by a triangle that refers to the Trinity . In the center of the reredos is a large tablet in a color imitating gray marble. In the middle there is a recess in which a statue of the Virgin Mary made of gilded wood is placed. The saying of a Marian prayer frames the niche: Ô Marie, conçue sans péché, priez pour nous qui avons recours à vous ( German  O Mary, receive without sin, pray for us who take refuge in you ). Maria wears a gold-colored coat over a gold-colored dress. With her eyes on the ground, her arms open as a sign of acceptance, she stands upright on a globe. Only the face and hands of the statue are painted in color.

Another side altar is dedicated to St. Joseph . His tabernacle made of painted wood is crowned with a curved and tapering hood with a golden crucifix on top. The shrine is painted with a marble-imitating paint, partly gilded. Its arched door bears no decoration. Above and behind the tabernacle there is a large painting showing Saint Joseph with the baby Jesus. Joseph is shown upright in front of a luminous background with the baby Jesus on his left arm and a branch of lilies in his right hand. His gaze is mild and paternal on the child, who raises his right hand to bless. The painting is fitted into a semicircular frame made of painted and gilded wood.

The church has two other murals. The first shows the Assumption of Mary . Mary is carried away by angels, her head crowned with stars, above her a cloud of putti . Her gaze is directed towards the sky, her arms are spread wide. A mural is also dedicated to the patron saint of the church, St. Agathe. It shows her in prison when an angel brings her the attributes of a martyr , the halo and the martyr's palm . While the painting with the depiction of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary corresponds to the usual iconography , scenes in the images of St. Agathe usually deal with her torture .

The church has a baptismal font in an unusual shape. Instead of the common shape of a free-standing pool, the gray pools are almost completely embedded in wall niches that can be closed off with wooden doors. Bars made of the same material as the doors frame the niches and form a round arch with a cross at the top. The shape of the baptismal font is reminiscent of the wash basin in monasteries for hand washing before a mass .

Former moth

The medieval castle, according to local tradition the origins of the community, was located on a mound of earth 14 m high and around 20 m in diameter. A castle was subsequently built on this site, reinforced at the instigation of Gaston Fébus , Viscount of Béarn, in 1368. After the castle was abandoned, a church was built, undoubtedly using the materials from the former castle. But the church was also torn down as a result.
