Ouillon Town Hall

Ouillon is a French municipality with 552 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Pyrénées-Atlantiques in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine (before 2016: Aquitaine ). The municipality belongs to the Arrondissement of Pau and the canton of Pays de Morlaàs et du Montanérès (until 2015: canton of Morlaàs ).

The inhabitants are called Ouillonais and Ouillonaises .

Ouillon is located about 15 km northeast of Pau in the historical province of Béarn on the eastern edge of the department.

Ouillon is located in the river Adour catchment area . One of its tributaries, the Luy , together with its tributary, the Lelusset, crosses the territory of the municipality. The Biarré, a tributary of the Souye , flows along the eastern border with the neighboring municipalities of Gabaston and Espéchède.

history

Ouillon was first mentioned in the records in the 11th century. In the 1385 census of the Béarn, ten households were counted. Ouillon belonged to the Bailliage of Pau. In the Middle Ages, the village was run by the commander of the Order of Malta of Caubin and Morlaàs, who also exercises justice. A hospital for the reception and care of pilgrims , which is first mentioned around 1290, was also in his area of ​​responsibility . There was also a lay monastery in Ouillon, owned by two abbots who shared the tithe and took turns speaking to the pastor. In 1569 the lay monastery came into the hands of the Dabancentz family, and in 1674 it belonged to the Abadie family.

After an initial peak of the population of around 500 in the 1870s, the number fell to around 240 during short periods of recovery by the 1950s, before strong growth began in the following period.

Attractions

Parish Church of Saint-Jean-Baptiste
  • Parish church of Ouillon, dedicated to John the Baptist . It was built between 1848 and 1873 according to plans by the architect Poublan. The new church was a replacement for a previous church that was located in today's parish cemetery and was under the aegis of the Order of Malta. The current nave with a main aisle and a side aisle is closed off by a three-walled apse . The church is equipped with a sacristy and a bell tower above the entrance porch. It carries two bells, one cast in 1686, the other in 1868. The stained glass windows are the work of the glass painters Pierre Arcencam and Henri Gesta. Inside there are many items from the 17th to 19th centuries that are registered as national cultural assets.
  • Farm Soulagnet. It was built in the middle of the 19th century. The year "1855" and the name of the owner at the time, Jean Soulagnet, can be seen above the entrance. The farm consists of various buildings (residential buildings, barn, cowshed and shed) which, together with a wall, form an inner courtyard. The entrance to the winding interior staircase is carved and painted with motifs of snakes and green fleurons and a white cross.

Economy and Infrastructure

Agriculture, with a focus on growing maize and raising livestock, is traditionally the municipality's most important economic factor.
