Nay is a French commune 3288 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Pyrénées-Atlantiques in the region Nouvelle-Aquitaine . It belongs to the Arrondissement of Pau and is the capital of the canton of Ouzom, Gave et Rives du Neez (until 2015: capital of the two cantons of Nay-Ouest and Nay-Est ).

Nay is located about 20 kilometers southeast of Pau directly on the Gave de Pau , a tributary of the Adour . The small town has with the station Coarraze -Nay connections to Toulouse and Bayonne and is used by intercity trains of the SNCF and regional lines of TER Aquitaine and the TER Occitanie served.

history
Nay was mentioned for the first time in 1120. The city was founded in 1302. In 1543 the small town was almost completely destroyed by a fire. And as soon as the residents had recovered from it, the city was sacked by the Huguenots in 1569. Later Nay served as a trading center. Here, in addition to Oloron-Sainte-Marie , the famous berets (Bèret) are still made from wool . This is documented today in the Beret Museum.
Nay was repeatedly hit by the floods of the Gave de Pau, most recently in June 2013 during the great flood .
