history

Moncaup developed in the Middle Ages on the border to Bigorre as a so-called castelnau . A Castelnau ( German  Neuburg , Occitan castèl nòu , in Vulgar Latin castellum novum ) is a village or town that was founded near a mound castle . A development spurt resulted from the location on one of the Way of St. James to Santiago de Compostela . A hospital was set up to receive and care for the passing pilgrims under the direction of the Order of Malta of Caubin and Morlaàs . The 1385 census counted 52 households in Moncaup, including that of the hospital commander. The village was part of the Lembeye Bailliage . Due to its geographical location, Moncoup repeatedly got into conflicts of interest in the neighboring territories, e. B. 1415 between the houses of Béarn and Armagnac . Subsequently, however, Moncaup became the seat of an important market which had been approved by Catherine of Navarre , which helped the size of Moncaup to a further boost. In the 16th century, today's municipality of Monpezat belonged to Moncaup. In 1675 there were already 135 households in Moncaup.
