history

A witness to the settlement of the area in prehistory is a former camp that was unearthed in the area of the municipality. On an area of more than one hectare, it contained two ring walls lined with ditches and a sizable barrow , the central dolmen of which was demolished in 1963.

In Audiracq, the remains of a fortified complex with a circular wall from the 10th and 11th centuries can be seen today . The ruins of a chapel of a former parish are recorded on the map by Cassini from 1750 under the name Eglisias . In the Middle Ages , Monassut and Audiracq belonged to Gerderest and each owned a lay monastery as a vassal of the Viscount of Béarn. In the census of 1385, 25 households in Monassut, Audiracq and Gerderest were counted and noted that they belonged to the Bailliage of the archpriesthood of Lembeye .

In 1833 the former municipality of Audiracq merged with the former municipality of Monassut to form the municipality of Monassut-Audiracq.

On July 13, 1944, an armed conflict broke out in Monassut between a group of maquisards , French partisans of the Resistance , and a convoy of German occupation troops and militiamen with heavy losses on both sides.

Attractions

Parish Church of Saint Martin in Monassut
  • Parish Church of Monassut, dedicated to Martin of Tours . It is a new building erected in the second half of the 19th century, which replaced the simple previous church, which was located south of the former lay monastery before 1829. Its single-nave nave is closed to the west with a square bell tower above the entrance porch, which is covered by a polygonal helmet . The baptismal font from the 18th century and the bell and a painting from the 19th century are registered as national cultural assets.
  • Parish Church of Audiracq, dedicated to the Assumption . Even if there is no exact date, it is assumed that the small rural church was built as early as the early Middle Ages . A bell gable protrudes from the long building with a nave, the bell of which is protected by two small canopies. The bell measures 57 cm in height and 68 cm in diameter and was made in 1808 by the bell founder Pierre Ebrard. One stained glass window in the church dates from the end of the 19th century and is the work of Mauméjean stained glass , three others are works by the glass painter Arcencam from the beginning of the 20th century. Other items of equipment date from the 17th to 19th centuries and are registered as national cultural assets.
  • Audiracq Castle. It was the seat of the lay monastery, located near the parish church of Audiracq, first mentioned in the records in 1364 when Ramon, landlord of Audiracq, Gaston Fébus , Viscount of Béarn paid homage to it. The owners of the lay monastery can be traced over the centuries: Odet d'Audiracq (1538), Ramonet d'Ostabent (1546), Isaac de Bourdiu (1616), Isaac de Lafargue (1639), Belloc family (1741), Lasserre ( 1764), Jean-Baptiste de Ribeaux (1778) to Jean-Baptiste Dupoey (1786). The building was probably destroyed in the Huguenot Wars and largely rebuilt at the end of the 16th century. Individual elements, such as B. the fireplace, date from this era. On the map of Cassini the castle is entered as Bellocq . As a result, the building was redesigned and has preserved numerous elements from the 18th and 19th centuries, e.g. B. a spiral staircase without a stairwell .
