history
A stone ax from the Neolithic Age , dated to approx. 3500-2500 BC. And a bronze ax from the Bronze Age , dated 1800 BC. BC, document the presence of humans in prehistoric times. A find of 162 coins from the 2nd century AD proves the settlement in the Gallo-Roman period .
The name Abos has been mentioned in documents or on cards since the 12th century, sometimes in variations, e.g. B. as an abossium in 1345. In 1385 it was recorded that the village had 46 households, including a blacksmith , a weaver and a wax puller , who were grouped around the church and the residence of the liege lord . The feudal estate and two lay monasteries existed until the 17th century.

Attractions
- The church, dedicated to John the Baptist , was originally a wooden structure from the 14th century on old foundations. Around 1735 the entrances were found to be too narrow and their number doubled. From 1860 to 1885 the church underwent extensive renovations. Two aisles were built to reinforce the building after the old aisle collapsed and the church proved too small. A sacristy was added. The Italian painter Fortuni decorated the interior.
- Up to the 17th century there were two lay monasteries in subscriptions. The building of one of the monasteries not far from the church has been preserved to this day. The writer Charles de Bordeu (1857–1926) lived in the country house and received his friends there, especially the poet Francis Jammes .
- The Saint-André church also has a small Romanesque church dedicated to the Apostle Andrew . It was built in the 11th or 12th century from a single nave and was set on fire by Gabriel de Lorges during the Wars of Religion in 1569 . It was restored in the 18th century and again restored around 1821.
- On a nearby hill, called "Castet d'Abos", an extensive rampart can be seen. Ceramic remains and fragments from amphorae indicate settlement at least during the Roman period . In the 16th or 17th century a building called a "chateau" was erected on the site that was inhabited by Pierre de Marca (1595–1662) during the 17th century . Pierre de Marca was Archbishop of Toulouse , later of Paris , President of the Parliament of Navarre in Pau and historian of Béarn . During the German occupation in World War II, resistance fighters found refuge in the “castle” and on the grounds. Today a winery is growing a Jurançon on the site .
