The local Windberg Monastery was founded by Count Albert I von Bogen with the assistance of Bishop Otto I von Bamberg at the beginning of the 12th century. The place itself has belonged to the Straubing Rent Office and the Mitterfels Regional Court of the Electorate of Bavaria since the Middle Ages . Windberg Monastery had a closed Hofmark and was dissolved in 1803 in the course of secularization . The church became a parish church, the prelature a parsonage. The convent building came into private ownership and housed a brewery from 1835. In 1818 today's political community was established.

Re-establishment of the monastery

In 1923 the monastery was rebuilt by Premonstratensians from the Dutch abbey of Berne-Heeswijk.
