history

Until the church is planted

The first traces of human settlement were found on the Buchberg near Münster in a cave that dates back to 50,000 BC. Was used by Neanderthals . The name of the settlement is first recorded in 934 as Steina (stony water, river) in the cartular of the Ebersberg monastery. Via Steinaha , Stainaha and Stainach it became Steinach in 1452 .

There are indications that a monastery was founded in the area of the municipality in the 8th century, but it was destroyed in the 10th century. The historically documented re-establishment of a collegiate monastery ( Pfaffenmünster Monastery ) took place at the beginning of the 12th century; this monastery was closed in 1803.

According to the Salbuch of the Augsburg Cathedral Chapter written in 1324 , Steinach was the center of the Propsteigüter north of the Danube. In the 15th century Steinach was led by the district court of Mitterfels , in the 16th century by the district court of Straubing .

Noble castle and chateau owners exercised lower jurisdiction over the subservient peasants in the Hofmark Steinach . In 1549 the then ruler and knight widow Anna von der Wart built today's manor house from the rubble stones of the old castle. Of the numerous noble families, the Steinacher, the Rainer, the Warter von der Wart, the Hundt von Sulzemoos, the Herwart von Hohenburg and the Berchem von Königsfeld were particularly significant.

In 1818 the political municipality was established.

20th century

Major changes in the castle estate took place under August von Schmieder at the beginning of the 20th century, who had the magnificent new castle built. It came into the possession of the Reichsautobahnen company in 1939, housed parts of the NSDAP Reichsleitung under Reichsleiter Martin Bormann since 1941 and was set on fire by the SS on April 23, 1945, shortly before the end of the war, in order to destroy secret files.

The old castle was transformed into a hunting and castle hotel by the building contractor Lindbüchl in the mid-1980s. Soon after, it was converted into a rehabilitation clinic, which, however, had to cease operations after a few successful years.

Incorporations

In 1956, the Sackhof district came from Agendorf and the Berghof district from the Münster community to the Steinach community. On July 1, 1974, the greater part of the dissolved municipality Agendorf (except Muckenwinkling and Trudendorf) was incorporated. On May 1, 1978, the municipality of Münster was incorporated.

Population development

In the period from 1988 to 2018, the municipality grew from 2,094 to 3,171 by 1,077 inhabitants or 51.4%.

coat of arms

Blazon: A lowered, curled green tip, split into a golden heraldic lily. In the front two silver diagonal bars in blue, in the back a red cross bar in silver. The coat of arms has been used since 1981.

The two silver sloping bars on a blue background are taken from the coat of arms of the Knights of Steinach. The red cross comes from the coat of arms of the collegiate monastery St. Tiburtius from the former municipality of Münster. The Augsburg cathedral chapter owned large estates in the area of the former agendorf parish; it was also rich in the Steinach parish. The golden lily is a reminder of this. The field color green refers to the Steinacher grassland seed cultivation and the location of the municipality between the Bavarian Forest and the Danube plain.
