history

The first traces of human settlement were found on the Buchberg near Münster in a cave that was used by Neanderthals around 52,000 years ago.

Presumably in the 8th century a Benedictine monastery was founded in Münster , which received relics of the Roman martyr Tiburtius from Rome . Duke Tassilo III. and his father Odilo are named as the founder. This original Münster monastery is said to have perished in the Hungarian storms of the 10th century.

The property of the monastery formed the basis for the creation of a collegiate foundation . Even before the canons were relocated from Metten Abbey to Münster in 1157, around 1148 the “monasterium S. Tyburcii” was mentioned. The ten canons built the Romanesque collegiate church of St. Tiburtius and the parish church of St. Martin for the residents of the village.

In 1324 the dukes Heinrich XIV. , Heinrich XV. and Otto the Münster choir with people and goods under their protection. About ten years later the dukes awarded the canons court righteousness .

The parishes of St. Martin in Münster, Feldkirchen , Ascha and Stallwang were incorporated into the monastery. It owned the Münster and Öberau court brands , a Schwaighof in Aholfing and a large forest between Münster and Falkenfels .

As part of the Counter Reformation, the Canons' Monastery of St. Tiburtius was relocated to the St. Jakob Church in Straubing in 1581 . In Straubing the collegiate monastery named itself after St. Jakobus and St. Tiburtius.

In 1779 the composer and church musician Johann Baptist Schiedermayr the Elder was born in Münster.

The old collegiate church in Münster was used as a parish church and was incorporated into the Straubinger Stift until its dissolution in 1803. The Hofmark Pfaffmünster remained with the choir monastery until secularization . On October 26, 1803, the court's rights were transferred to the Straubing Regional Court , and the goods were transferred to the Straubing Rent Office .
