Joseph Anton Merz

Joseph Anton Merz (* 1681 in Marktoberdorf , Allgäu ; † January 7, 1750 in Straubing ) was a Swabian-Bavarian painter of the Baroque and early Rococo periods .

life and work

Until 1734 he mainly worked in the Straubing area and created mainly altarpieces and frescoes . His works include the cycle of frescoes from Oberaltaich Abbey and the ceiling frescoes of the Church of St. John of Nepomuk in Thürnthenning (today the large community of Moosthenning ). He can also be proven as an artist in Wörth an der Donau , on the Bogenberg , Schierling and Ittling . Together with his student Johann Adam Schöpf he created in 1729, the paintings on the nave walls and pilasters of the Cistercian - Collegiate Church of the Monastery Gotteszell .
