Schierling is a market in the Upper Palatinate district of Regensburg in Bavaria .

The market is an important business location and the southernmost municipality in the Upper Palatinate.

At the gates of Schierling, Napoleon and his allies defeated the Austrians in the " Battle of Eggmühl ". Already during the time of Emperor Otto I , he moved into his headquarters in Schierling during the siege of Regensburg on the "Via Augusta" built by the Romans , the street with the name of their Emperor Augustus .

geography

Geographical location

Schierling is located in the Lower Bavarian hill country between Regensburg and Landshut on the edge of the Hallertau and at the southern end of the Upper Palatinate . The place is also in the valley of the Große Laber and on an old Roman road from Eining to Straubing .

Community structure

There are 26 districts:

history

Parish Church of St. Peter and Paul Schierling
Church of St. Nicholas Hemlock

Hemlock was first mentioned in a document in 953 on the occasion of the siege of Regensburg under King Otto I.

Although Schierling was mentioned as "Markt Schirling" in the Middle Ages, Schierling was not officially named a market until the 1000th anniversary in 1953.

After the first parish church was mentioned in 1418, a new church building was mentioned between 1720 and 1726 as the "Cathedral of the Labertal".

On April 22, 1809, Napoleon and his allies defeated Austria decisively in the “ Battle of Eggmühl ”. This battle in the Laberaue and on the adjacent heights was later described by Napoleon as his greatest test. A lion monument has stood above the former battlefield since 1909, a reminder of the thousands of victims.

Incorporations

Until the Bavarian county reform in 1972 Hemlock was one of Lower Bavaria , but was then on the resolution of the old district Mallersdorf the district of Regensburg assigned and is now the most southerly village in the Upper Palatinate. Since the completion of the municipal reform in 1978, the market has consisted of eleven formerly independent municipal parts.

On January 1, 1972, the previously independent community Unterlaichling was incorporated. Allersdorf was added on January 1, 1973 . Buchhausen , Eggmühl , Inkofen , Mannsdorf , Oberdeggenbach , Pinkofen , Wahlsdorf and Zaitzkofen followed on May 1, 1978 .

Population development

Between 1988 and 2018 the market grew from 6,407 to 8,142 by 1,735 inhabitants or by 27.1%.

The coat of arms has been used since 1953.

Hemlock committed to social policy and the church

Schierling was the first community in the Regensburg district to join the campaign against exploitative child labor. With nearly 500 members, the Schierlinger Schools Association is one of the largest in Bavaria. In the 1990s, the Catholic parish drew attention to itself through an extraordinarily large and over six year long relief operation for the refugees in Croatia . In 2005, as part of the parish mission, the Catholic parish council and the Protestant church council made it possible to set up a "chain of lights" between the two churches, in which more than 1,500 citizens took part - as well as in the subsequent baptism ceremony. Since autumn 2014, a volunteer group has been involved in looking after asylum seekers living in Schierling and Eggmühl.

Community partnerships

Since 1997 there has been a community partnership with the French town of Penmarc'h on the Atlantic coast of Brittany.

The reason for this community partnership is the " Battle of Eggmühl " in 1809, when Napoleon and the Bavarian troops won a victory against Austria . Eggmühl was an independent municipality until 1978 and was then incorporated into the Schierling market. In Penmarc'h, France, there has been a lighthouse called “ Phare d'Eckmühl ” since 1897 , which was built with a generous inheritance from the daughter of General Davout , who was named “Prince of Eggmühl” by Napoleon because of his successes ) was appointed. Since 1997 there has been a European partnership between the Schierling market and the French municipality of Penmarc'h. Penmarc'h used to be one of the most important fishing ports in Brittany. Visiting trips take place within the framework of the community partnership.

Sports and clubs

The Schierling gymnastics club, with numerous sports departments, is one of the largest local clubs. Schierling and its districts have well-developed sports facilities. Overall, Schierling has a rich club life.

The volunteer fire brigade Schierling as well as the fire brigades of the districts provide fire protection and general help in the municipality and beyond. In addition, the on-site helper supports Oberdeggenbach with first aid throughout the municipality. There are also a number of clubs such as the Schierling fishing club, Schierling radio club , several rabbit breeding clubs and the Walkenstetten stopping club .

The Association for Home Care Schierling eV, also known as Schierlinger Gennßhenkher, is committed to preserving local customs and representing the time of the Thirty Years War . The association has set itself the task of portraying everyday civil and military life in Bavaria in 1633.

Regular events

The "Bavarian Gstanzlsänger-Treffen" has been held annually since 1976 and is considered to be the oldest in Bavaria and was brought into being by the former district keeper of the Upper Palatinate, Adolf Eichenseer , together with the Schierling market. Since 1990 there has been an open air, the “ Labertal Festival ” , on the first weekend in August . Furthermore, the "Gennßhenkher Festival" takes place every four years to commemorate the time of the Thirty Years' War .

Economy and Infrastructure

The Schierling market has a good infrastructure with numerous craft, service and trading companies. Medical care is good and local supply companies are sufficiently available. Numerous residential and commercial settlements have emerged in recent years. Schierling has developed into a recognized commercial location of great regional importance.

Schierlinger Market

Bavarian quality award

In 2015, Schierling was awarded the Bavarian Quality Prize 2015 for its business-friendly local policy . The market received the award for its guiding principle "Schierling - Vorsprung attracts!", With which many structural efforts of the community in the past few years have been recognized.

Established businesses

Schierling is a central municipality with considerable medium-sized companies that are well-known beyond the municipality's borders, such as B. Labertaler Heil- und Mineralquellen , Webasto AG , Fahnen Kössinger, Kössinger Druck and ceramic decor distillery, Holmer Maschinenbau Eggmühl, Malzfabrik Müller Inkofen, Glasrecycling Schirmbeck, Spezial-Brauerei Schierling , Samvardhana Motherson Peguform .

The Bavarian Red Cross operates a senior citizens' and nursing home in the Eggmühl part of the municipality, and the Zaitzkofen part of the municipality also houses the International Sacred Heart of Jesus seminary of the Brotherhood of St. Pius X.

The place became known nationwide primarily for the "Schierlinger Roggen" produced by the princely brewery Thurn und Taxis. Master brewer Ludwig Schifferl was the first in Germany to bring a rye beer back onto the market in the 20th century . In 2020 the special brewery Schierling brewed the "Schierlinger Roggen" again after the original recipe was found in the brewery attic.

traffic

Schierling is located on federal highway 15 and, since 2011, also on federal highway 15n , which is like a four-lane motorway , which means for Schierling a direct connection to the European trunk road network. At the Schierling-Süd junction, the new industrial area "Am Birlbaum" was created, in which well-known companies have settled, which is why both the number of residents and the number of jobs subject to social insurance have increased significantly. The Eggmühl – Langquaid railway line that runs through the village is only used for sporadic freight and excursion passenger traffic. The Munich – Regensburg railway also runs east of the community center . The Eggmühl Station is a regionally important breakpoint, and on the hemlock every hour of Regensburg, Landshut Munich Airport as well as in 2-hour intervals at Munich and Nuremberg is attached. Bus route 25, which is operated by Regionalbus Ostbayern , acts as a feeder between Schierling and Eggmühl station . Since the Neufahrner Spange was completed in December 2018, Eggmühl station has been connected to Munich Airport every hour with the ÜFEX (national airport express).

Ammunition depot

Outside the village there is a former main ammunition depot of the Bundeswehr (MunHptDep Schierling). It was built from 1937 to 1939 as an air ammunition facility and was closed at the end of 2009. Since the dissolution, the 176-hectare site, which includes 20 buildings, 27 kilometers of roads and 97 bunkers, has been for sale by the Federal Agency for Real Estate Tasks (BImA). The Schierling- Langquaid planning association “Networking-Development-Niederbayern-Oberpfalz 4.0” (VENO 4.0) was founded for the land use planning of the former Schierling ammunition depot .

Grounding irons can still be found in the forests around the "Muna", which testify to the storage of aircraft engines in the last months of the war in 1945. The Muna also acted as a warehouse for ammunition with chemical warfare agents. On April 25, 1945 the "Muna" was bombed several times by a squadron of American fighter-bombers. However, there was only comparatively little damage. The declaration of the restricted area and thus the "white zone" by the American military took place two days before the non-fighting handover of the depot on April 29, 1945. Immediately after the end of World War II, this depot housed the largest deposit / compression depot in the whole of Germany for chemical Toxic gas bombs (gas content approx. 6000 t), which were brought together by the Americans from other air ammunition plants / main plants, were equipped with warfare agent tabun . After the surrender, under the military protection of the Americans, the stocks were partly destroyed, transported and probably sunk in the Baltic Sea or partly shipped to America for experimental purposes and chemical analysis.

Every year on May 1st, the political community and the church congregations fulfill the vows made in 1945/46 with a “Thanksgiving service for salvation from war hardship”.
