The international seminary of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Zaitzkofen (Bavaria) is a seminary of the Priestly Society of St. Pius X. , which is also the sponsor of the seminary.

History and Development

In 1978 the training center of the Society of St. Pius X. in Zaitzkofen Castle was ceremoniously opened by Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre . In the Zaitzkofen seminary, the Society of St. Pius X. is currently training around 30 candidates for priesthood from different countries. Since the seminary was opened, over 100 priestly ordinations have taken place in Zaitzkofen.

Since the Priestly Society of St. Pius X has no canonical status in the Roman Catholic Church, diocesan bishops or religious superiors do not send candidates for training to the seminary in Zaitzkofen. The Zaitzkofen seminary is not considered to be a training facility of the Roman Catholic Church, as the Apostolic See did not give permission for the establishment of such a supra-diocesan seminary (cf. CIC / 1983 can. 237). The consecrations donated in Zaitzkofen are considered to be forbidden but validly donated according to church law. The local bishop Gerhard Ludwig Müller called the priestly ordinations carried out there as an "act of schism ".
