geography

Geographical location

The community is located south of a bend in the Danube between the eastern outskirts of Regensburg and about 15 kilometers west of the city of Wörth an der Donau . Regenstauf is on the other side of the Danube . The industrial town of Neutraubling , which was spun off from the municipality of Barbing in 1951, is located south of Barbing .

Community structure

In addition to Barbing, there are ten other officially named municipal parts:

Altach

A document from the 8th century states that, with the consent of Duke Tassilo of Bavaria, the Sankt Emmeram monastery in Regensburg was given land on the island of "Opinesaldaha" = Altach, surrounded by arms of the Danube. Auburg and Altach are still characterized by agriculture today.

Auburg
Church of St. Stephan Auburg

The Hofmark Auburg, a pond complex with a moat and two almost rectangular rings from the beginning of the 13th century, was destroyed by fire in 1634 and subsequently belonged to the Regensburg Bishop Pankratius. The 1818 with the Bavarian Gemeindeedikt established rural community Auburg was integrated into the community Illkofen on April 1, 1949th This came to the community of Barbing on January 1, 1978.

Eltheim
Church of St. Laurentius Eltheim

The church of Otelthaima is mentioned in 1145 . Eltheim was destroyed in the Thirty Years War and hit by the plague in 1634 . Today's baroque church of St. Laurentius was built in 1724 . The rural community of Eltheim, founded in 1818, was incorporated into the community of Barbing on January 1, 1978.

Friesheim
Church of St. Maria Friesheim

Friesheim was first mentioned in writing in a document from the year 901 , when Bishop Tato had acquired the place and the surrounding area. The following prince-bishops were sovereigns and landlords who ruled with jurisdiction over the Donaugau up to secularization. Friesheim is one of the oldest fishing villages in the Upper Palatinate. The Friesheim Danube fishermen have meanwhile become hobby fishermen. The expansion of the Danube has significantly changed the location towards the Danube. A promenade has literally emerged. The rural community of Friesheim, founded in 1818, was incorporated into the community of Barbing on January 1, 1978.

Illkofen
St. Martin Illkofen Church

The village is characterized by the church of St. Martin with its strikingly shaped tower. The parish is an original parish and can look back on 1200 years of history. The rural community of Illkofen, founded in 1818, was incorporated into the community of Barbing on January 1, 1978.

Sarching
Church of St. Mariä-Himmelfahrt Sarching

On the former Fronhof Sarching, the construction of a chapel dedicated to the Virgin Mary by the Bavarian dukes of the Agilolfinger family is documented between 520 and 780 . The name Sarching is said to go back to a founder Saricho or Saro. The municipality of Sarching, which has been independent since 1818, was incorporated into the municipality of Barbing on January 1, 1978 with the municipalities of Eltheim, Friesheim and Illkofen.

Unterheising

According to the municipality, 115 people lived in Unterheising on January 1, 2019.

history

Until the church is planted

The community area was already settled in prehistoric times (discovery of a stool grave from the bell-cup culture ) and Roman times. The ending -ing in the name indicates the time of the successive Bavarian conquest from the 6th to the 9th century. For the first time Barbing is mentioned in an inventory of the Niederaltaich abbot Urolf (the Breviarius Urolfi ), which was created no later than 790 (probably on behalf of Charlemagne). Friedrich Barbarossa gathered his army for a crusade near Barbing near Kreuzhof . The aristocratic Barbing family is documented from 1130.

After their extinction, the Regensburg Monastery acquired the fortress in Barbing in 1463 . The Barbing nursing office of the Regensburg bishopric that was then formed initially included the court brands Burgweinting , Dech Betten and Schwabelweis in addition to Barbing itself, which was enclosed by the Haidau district court of Bavaria . From the 1750s onwards, the Barbinger caretaker also administered the Auburg, Illkofen and Geisling court brands, which were also located outside the Hochstiftish territory in the Haidau district court, as well as the Siegenstein estate in the Upper Palatinate office of Wetterfeld . With the secularization of 1803 Barbing first came to the Principality of Regensburg of the Prince-Primate Dalberg and then in 1810 to the Kingdom of Bavaria . In 1818, with the Bavarian municipal edict, the political community was established.

19th to 21st century

In the 19th century, King Ludwig I had the dead straight Walhalla road built between Obertraubling and Barbing, which runs in the direction of the Walhalla .

From 1936 to 1938, the Obertraubling military airfield was built near Barbings , which was also the production site of the Messerschmitt works from 1940 . Barbing also became a target for allied bomber groups. After the end of the Second World War, displaced persons from the former German eastern regions and all of Eastern Europe settled in the ruins of the airfield buildings . The political municipality of Neutraubling did not emerge until April 1, 1951 from parts of the municipality of Barbing on the military airfield which was destroyed in air raids in 1944/45 and which the Americans had designated Airfield R.97 . At the end of the 1960s the community got a motorway connection. In the 1990s, a bypass road was built for Bundesstrasse 8 (now downgraded to State Road 2660) to calm the town through , which until then had divided the town in two. In the last few years, 8 industrial areas have been created in Unterheising and on the former federal road.

Incorporation and outsourcing

On April 1, 1951, the industrial estate Obertraubling was detached from the municipality as the new municipality of Neutraubling , today Neutraubling is the largest city in the Regensburg district . The municipality of Barbing in its current form was only created in 1978 on the occasion of the municipal regional reform in Bavaria . On January 1, 1978 the former districts of Kreuzhof, Irlmauth and Irl came to the city of Regensburg and on May 1, 1978 the gardeners' settlement and the Oberheising estate came to the industrial community of Neutraubling. At the same time, the previously independent communities of Eltheim, Friesheim, Illkofen (with the town of Auburg, which was incorporated on April 1, 1949) and Sarching were incorporated.

Population development

Between 1988 and 2018 the municipality grew from 3,454 to 5,395 by 1,941 inhabitants or by 56.2%.

Religions

As in the entire Upper Palatinate, the majority of the population in Barbing is Roman Catholic. The Catholics belong to the parish group Barbing / Sarching / Illkofen and thus to the deanery Donaustauf , which is assigned to the diocese of Regensburg .

coat of arms

Coat of arms of the municipality of Barbing
Blazon : “Split by red and silver; in front a silver sloping bar, behind a blue bar with a tinted top. "
Justification for the coat of arms: The silver sloping bar stands for the Regensburg bishopric , to which the municipality belonged for a long time, and the tinned blue bar for the Barbing family, which had its seat here until the 15th century.

Flood polder Eltheim

Flutpolder Eltheim: Upper half of the picture, left the Danube

The planned flood polder "Eltheim" is named after the district of Eltheim. The town lies on the western edge of the planned, about 590 hectares large controlled flood polders and would be in addition to the Pfatterer district Geisling , which is located southeast, mainly affected. Its retention capacity of around 16 million cubic meters would be used in the event of a very large flood event and relieve the downstream , including Straubing and Deggendorf . The municipality of Barbing and all municipalities in the surrounding area bordering the Danube have unanimously and emphatically opposed the creation of controlled flood polders planned by the Bavarian state government to mitigate flood levels on the Danube. The district administrator of the district of Regensburg Tanja Schweiger is also skeptical. The groundwater problem that has been known for years, caused by the Danube, and the threat to the drinking water supply of Wörth, which is also in the immediate vicinity of the planned flood polders, speak clearly against it. A strong protest movement has emerged from farmers and citizens.

On April 11, 2015, the CSU district chairwoman and Minister of Social Affairs, Emilia Müller, visited the village of Kiefenholz , across from the Danube, to familiarize herself with the problem of flood polders.

Due to the coalition agreement concluded between the Free Voters and the CSU after the state elections on October 14, 2018 in Bavaria , the flood polder concept is no longer being pursued in the Regensburg district. This was a key demand of the Free Voters. The funds released are to be invested in decentralized flood protection along the Danube and all its inlets.
