history

The oldest documented place in the community is Etterzhausen , which was first mentioned in the 9th century. Most of the other districts go back to the 12th century. The places Nittendorf and Etterzhausen were badly devastated in the Thirty Years War . For a long time there were hammer mills for ore processing in Eichhofen and Schönhofen .

The present-day community of Nittendorf was created on July 1, 1972 as part of the local government reform by amalgamating the five previously independent communities of Eichhofen (enlarged to include parts of Rothenbügl in 1945 or 1946), Etterzhausen, Haugenried, Nittendorf and Schönhofen. On November 12, 2003 Nittendorf was raised to the market . On January 1, 2014, a part of the dissolved community-free area Pielenhofer Wald was incorporated on the right of the Naab .

Between 1988 and 2018 the municipality grew from 6,558 to 9,277 by 2,719 inhabitants or by 41.5%.

Attractions

Parish Church of St. Katharina Nittendorf

The church was built in 1730 by the Examining Monastery . The older tower should still come from the previous building. In 1895 the church was expanded. Inside, a wooden figure of Mary on the crescent moon from 1500, several tombstones and confessionals with acanthus carvings are noteworthy. In 2012, a statue of the Virgin, donated by the Nittendorf Boys' Association, was set up in a niche above the entrance portal.

The two-storey complex with an octagonal tower was built in its current form in 1590 by the then owner of Etterzhausen's Hans Siegmund von Erlbeck. It was rebuilt after being destroyed by fire in the Thirty Years War. In 1799 it was expanded by the then owner Friedrich Freiherr von Dittmer. It has been owned by the Fromm family since 1858.

Eichhofen Castle

Today's three-story, rectangular building dates from the beginning of the 16th century and was expanded in 1866.

  • Castle ruin Loch
  • Alpinensteig , hiking trail through rock formations of the Franconian Jura with a summit cross
  • Robber's cave near Etterzhausen:

The 24 meter long and 7 meter high cave probably offered protection to the residents of the area in dangerous times past. The remains of a square tower (called Hohes Haus ), which probably served as an observation tower, are still preserved above the cave .

The Werdenfels house is a Werdenfels mountain house. In 1906 it was erected at an exhibition in Nuremberg . Geller von Kühlwetter bought the model house, had it set up as a private villa near Eichhofen and gave it his name. In 1929 the diocesan presence bought it and used it as a youth sanctuary. In 1934 and 1935 the house was extended by two chapels and used as a retreat home. In 1940 it was confiscated by the SS and used as a transit camp. After further uses as a home for sick resettlers and then as a baby hospital for the city of Regensburg, it was confiscated by the Americans in 1945. It has been a retreat house again since 1947.

  • Church in Schönhofen:

Simple medieval church with a square tower and pyramid roof. The west wall consists of adjacent rock. A remarkable memorial stone of the Sauerzapf family from 1708.

  • Miner church St. Nikolaus in Haugenried:

The small Romanesque church was built around 1150 by miners who were mining iron ore in the area . The walls are made of large blocks and are one meter thick. Legend has it that the church was consecrated by St. Boniface .

  • Maria zur Buche chapel in the Undorf district:
  • From Grafenrieder Weg and its cross streets, walkers can enjoy a beautiful view over the lower Naab valley , over the entire northern part of the city of Regensburg and the nearby Keilberg. On a clear day, some mountain ranges of the Bavarian Forest can be seen from there , for example the Pröller 60 kilometers away .
